Travis Lowdermilk, author of "User-Centered Design," offers his top tips for building user-friendly applications

1. Steal (I mean borrow) from others.

So many developers feel like they have to create experiences from scratch. There’s absolutely no shame in looking at others’ work and implementing what you’ve learned. Obviously, I’m not advocating stealing of intellectual property, but it’s impossible to come up with amazing experiences all on your own. It takes inspiration! Don’t be afraid to learn from others.

2. Your users know more than you give them credit for.

Many developers get into mindset that the users are the enemy. They’re the angry hoard collecting outside their office door shouting, “When will it be done!” Also, some developers feel like users don’t have the technical expertise to help solve software problems. Your uses are your greatest asset when it comes to gaining new insight about your application. It’s your responsibility to give them the language so they can articulate what they need. Continually ask questions, and make sure to validate that you’re understanding the comments accurately.

3. Don’t be afraid to get creative.

So many developers I talk to say things like “I can’t draw, I could never be a designer." While I’m not going to suggest everyone can be a designer, I still believe that everyone can flex their creative muscle. Just because you can’t paint a Mona Lisa, it shouldn’t prevent you from making basic sketches of your application’s workflow. Bottom line, if you can draw three basic shapes, you can sketch a thought or a design idea. Don’t be afraid to pick up a pencil or, better yet, hand one to your users to help them express their needs.

4. Have a purpose.

I liken the software development process to painting a room. Most of the work comes in the preparation. Clearing furniture, covering the floor, cleaning and taping off surfaces, all before you apply a single drop of paint. Building an application should have the same careful attention to planning. Don’t build features for technology’s sake or just because you can. Make sure each feature in your application has a purpose and is fulfilling a need. You should be able to adequately explain each feature and why it’s in your application.

5. When all else fails, reboot.

Sometimes an application’s design gets so far from its intended design that you find yourself forgetting what problem you were trying to solve in the first place. It can be a painful process to start over, but it can also be liberating to keep what’s working and throw away what’s not.

Travis Lowdermilk has been developing custom software experiences for over 15 years in industries ranging from architecture, business, and health care. Currently, he works for a community hospital in central California. At the hospital, he creates line of business applications for clinical, financial, and performance improvement.

Predominantly using Microsoft frameworks, Travis creates solutions that employ a wide range of technologies such as: web, mobile, touch, and voice. Travis is a certified ASP.NET developer and has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – emphasizing in Information Systems. He’s currently enrolled in the Master’s program at DePaul University’s College of Digital Media. The focus of his study is Human-Computer Interaction and User-Centered Design.

A great primer and a helpful guide to explaining UCD to others

This book is a great introduction to the overarching concepts of user-centered design. It's not particularly in depth, but the author, Travis Lowdermilk, provides a great resource for folks that are new to UCD or who, like myself, are looking for a quick reference to use a starting point for introducing team mates to the principles behind a user centered approach to application development. The book is a quick read at 108 pages with a very useful list of online resources and more in-depth publications to dive into if you're after more detail.

The chapters cover a brief bit of definition and then move into planning, building and testing applications. Each chapter has a great recap at the end covering the high-level points made.

I will definitely be sharing this book around my office. I lead the development team in a marketing agency and work with a team of user experience and visual designers. User-Centered Design will be a helpful tool for me in guiding my own teams approach to development, and will also help the broader digital team at my agency to articulate the benefits of a user-centered approach.

By a developer for developers, the book is short, succinct, and can be read in a few short bouts of reading. Experienced developers will find that several user-centered design (UCD) practices have clearly been borrowed from, or absorbed into, classic software engineering practices.

Remainder of this review discusses the contents of each chapter.

Chapter 1 starts with "On January 9, 2007, a man quietly walked onto a stage and changed the course of technological history." That had me hooked.

Chapter 2 explains Usability, Human Computer Interaction (human factors), UCD, user experience, and how they relate to each other. It then goes on to explain UCD by describing what it isn't.

Chapter 3 is about working with users, knowing who your users are, understanding the different kinds of users, knowing when to listen to them, and when not to listen too literally.

Chapter 4 describes how to define a plan for your project. It starts with crafting a team mission statement. Project details are defined next with a title, description, stakeholders, and impact assessment. Importance of collecting user requirements without thinking about solutions follows next. That is followed by a discussion on collecting functional requirements, and how the application will solve the user requirements. The chapter proceeds with capturing data and workflow modeling, and ends with prototyping. Prototyping is also explained in greater detail in Chapter 8. Appendix A has a nice sample project template.

Chapter 5 starts with the importance of defining a manifesto or vision statement for an application. That is followed by a discussion on exercising restraint when adding features. The chapter delves into narrative, personas and scenarios, and their usage in the UCD process to refine the vision.

Chapter 6 delves into the need for creativity, and why it takes courage and hard work to exercise it. It discusses several ways for enhancing creativity, including studying how others do their work.

Chapter 7 delves into the study of design principles and their importance to UCD. It discusses the Principle of Proximity (Gestalt Principle), Visibility, Hierarchy, Mental Models and Metaphors, Progressive Disclosure, Consistency, Affordance and Constraints, Confirmation, Reaction Time (Hick's law), and Movement Time (Fitt's law).

Chapter 8 delves into gathering feedback for a new application using surveys, informal interviews, formal interviews, contextual inquiry, task analysis, heuristic evaluation, and A/B testing. Story boarding and prototyping as a means of visualizing the new application are also discussed in detail.

Chapter 9 discusses usability studies of existing applications as a means of gaining feedback. It details procedures and tools that may be used.

Every developer should read this book and absorb the practices described here, especially older developers who have been hearing about UCD but are not aware of its practices.

Solid survey of best practices

User-Centered Design by Travis Lowdermilk is a solid overview of the principles and practices of designing a software project with a focus on your users. The book does a good job of laying out the basic tools and processes of user-centered design, like usability studies, surveys, and project plans. It also argues convincingly for the power of its central points: user focus, preparation, and a structured process.

If you're looking for a deep dive into design theory, this is probably not a book you want. Rather than dig into abstract design issues, this book instead acts as a survey of the user-centered design landscape, and points you to resources to go deeper if a particular topic catches your interest. Lowdermilk also does a good job of pointing out examples of the different principles discussed, though for a stretch of the book he appears to be a bit fixated on a small selection of examples, particularly 53 Inc.'s popular iPad app Paper.

I'd recommend this book for developers who want to open their minds to design considerations and improve their ability to make usable products. It particularly seems suited for the engineer who knows technically how to implement features and write good code, but is still figuring out how to write applications that delight users. I'd especially recommend it for team leads or independent developers who are more likely to be able to meet users and be a part of managing requirements. I think all engineers could benefit from the books emphasis on the users point of view, but the real benefits will come to those who are able to make its suggestions part of the structure of their product workflows.

Welcome to LabVIEW

LabVIEW, or Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench, is a graphical programming language that has been widely adopted throughout industry, academia, and research labs as the standard for data acquisition and instrument control software. Currently running on Macintoshes (and Mac clones), Sun SPARCstations, HP 9000/700 Series workstations, and personal computers (PCs) running Windows 3.1, Windows NT, or Windows 95, LabVIEW is a powerful and flexible instrumentation and analysis software system.

Computers are much more flexible than standard instruments, and creating your own LabVIEW program, or virtual instrument (VI), is simple. LabVIEW's intuitive user interface makes writing and using programs exciting and fun!

LabVIEW departs from the sequential nature of traditional programming languages and features an easy-to-use graphical programming environment, including all of the tools necessary for data acquisition (DAQ), data analysis, and presentation of results. With its graphical programming language, called “G,” you program using a graphical block diagram that compiles into machine code. Ideal for a countless number of science and engineering applications, LabVIEW helps you solve many types of problems in only a fraction of the time and hassle it would take to write “conventional” code.

Beyond the Lab

LabVIEW has found its way into such a broad spectrum of virtual instrumentation applications that it is hard to know where to begin. As its name implies, it began in the laboratory and still remains very popular in many kinds of laboratories-from major research and development laboratories around the world (such as Lawrence Livermore, Argonne, Batelle, Sandia, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, White Sands, and Oak Ridge in the United States, and CERN in Europe), to R&D laboratories in many industries, and to teaching laboratories in universities all over the world, especially in the disciplines of electrical and mechanical engineering and physics.

The spread of LabVIEW beyond the laboratory has gone in many directions“up (aboard the space shuttle), down (aboard U.S. Navy submarines), and around the world (from oil wells in the North Sea to factories in New Zealand). Beyond temperature, users measure pressure, force, displacement, strain, pH, and so on, ad infinitum. Personal computers are used virtually everywhere. LabVIEW is the catalyst that links the PC with measuring things, not only because it makes it easy, but also because it brings along the ability to analyze what you have measured and display it and communicate it halfway around the world if you so choose.

After measuring and analyzing something, the next logical step often is to change (control) something based upon the results. For example, measure temperature and then turn on either a furnace or a chiller. Again, LabVIEW makes this easy to do; monitoring and control have become LabVIEW strengths. Sometimes it is direct monitoring and control, or it may be through communicating with a programmable logic controller (PLC) in what is commonly called supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).

Employ advanced techniques such as globals, locals, and attribute nodes.
Use LabVIEW to create your instrumentation applications.

Good starting resource - lots of examples

I've been programming data acquisition systems for a long time and was daunted by the scope of learning yet another programming language. LabView product literature seemed difficult to understand. But, with the help of LabView for Everyone, I got into the project quickly and get results immediately.
The book is easy to read, sometimes cutsey, but filled with good examples that work! They point out pitfalls, problem areas, and provide examples of how-to for many situations (for example, why the wires are different colors and sizes; common errors that result from broken wires, and so forth). Their examples were invaluable for getting my project done in a reasonable amount of time.
I'd strongly recommend this book for people faced with getting going with LabView. I developed my project typing with one hand and leafing through this book with the other. I guess it saved me 4 weeks of work. That alone makes it worth the price, several-fold.

A great book for a novice trying to become more proficient.

I had read all of the manuals that came with LabVIEW, but still needed something more to get me over the initial learning curve; something to answer the "Why should I do it that way?" questions .vs. the "Here's how to do it." The latter part of "LabVIEW for Everyone" did just that, in addition to providing more detail in how to perform basic operations.

The traditional doctrine of Islamic law in regard to international re­ lations is well known. The Shari'a includes many excellent provisions about declarations of war, treaties of peace, armistices, diplomatic envoys, negotiations and guarantees of safe conduct. But the fact remains that it divides the world, broadly speaking, into the "Abode of Islam" and the "Abode of 'War," and that it envisages the continu­ ance of intermittent war between them until the latter is absorbed in the former. In the course of such fighting, and in the intervals in be­ tween, many civilities were to be meticulously observed; but prisoners of war could be killed, sold or enslaved at the discretion of the Muslim authorities, and the women of those who resisted the advance of Islam could be taken as slave-concubines, regardless of whether they were single or married. The "Abode of Islam" did not, indeed, consist ex­ clusively of Muslims, for those whose religion was based on a book accepted by Islam as originally inspired and in practice, indeed, those other religions too - were not forced to embrace Islam but only to accept Muslim rule. They were granted the status of dhimmis, were protected in their persons and their property, were allowed to follow their own religion in an unobtrusive fashion, and were accorded the position of essentially second-class citizens. They were also of course, perfectly free to embrace Islam; but for a Muslim to be converted to another faith involved the death penalty.

A wonderful companion for rainforest trekking

We have just returned (Dec. 1998) from an eight day trip on the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers. Kricher's book is the perfect companion. Can be read in advance to prepare yourself for the astounding diversity of species and environments or consulted for immediate information through an excellent index. The well written and thorough text is a joy to read. Be warned the variety of animal, plant and insect species is unbelievable and Kricher's book is not a field guide. He does cover many of the common species, but if you are a bird, plant, reptile or insect nut, then bring appropriate field guides.

I am working and living in Belize. I found The Neotropical Companion to be an articulate explanation of how the New World tropics functions and grows. The fact that Kircher's written style is organized, interesting and insightful is an added bonus.

This book will make you feel close to the Neotropics, to the great scientists (Darwin, Wallace, Humboldt) who have visited there in the past, and to those scientists who are conducting leading research in the Neotropics today. It would merit 5 stars even if there were similar books out there, which there aren't.

In these books Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, pointed out very clearly and decisively that it all is from Allah (God) in person. He believes he met God in the form of a man and it is He who revealed the BEST knowledge of how to eat to live. We make no attempt at reinterpreting, reinventing or improving upon what the Messenger received from God. The objective of this book is only to make the reader aware of the means and ways the food and their by-products have been adversely transformed from the initial published dates of these writings to date, and from this awareness and updated information contained herein, can stay consistent with the principles taught in these writings. We felt there was a great need for an essential companion; essential, because through processing and commercialization, food has taken on a different form from what we had grown accustomed to. Since the 60’s and 70’s, food that was once called “pure” is not pure. Various government agencies responsible for checking the safety of food have adopted various definitions for political and economic reasons, but at the expense of health. Consequently, the word pure simply means that there are “acceptable” levels of toxins, or acceptable levels of mercury, or acceptable levels of pesticides, herbicides or solvents per part, per million. There was a time when brown sugar was a lot healthier than sugar is today. What was once stated as brown sugar was simply “raw sugar.” It was a lot healthier and when Elijah Muhammad recommended it, he did not mean what today has come to be known as brown sugar, which is highly refined white sugar with molasses poured over it. For on one hand he would not advise us to NOT eat refined products while simultaneously telling us to eat the new form of brown sugar. As well, take for instance the aspect of pork. This so-called food is completely prohibited due to forbidding of God and the indestructible worm inside. It is never to be taken for food, so much so, Elijah Muhammad advises that we should die first before we eat it. In today’s market, there are hundreds of thousands of products that are made from pork and its by-products. Since the 60’s, these products are not so well pointed out. These are just a few of the reasons this book is essential and will serve as an excellent companion to How To Eat To Live, Books 1 & 2. There are two main veins this book will pursue: one is the processes of food and the surrounding equipment associated and secondly, the commercialization of it for maximum profits and the expense of the people’s health in general. Of course, secondary to this is the fact that bad food equals bad health, which equals a great economic boom in medicine, doctors and hospitalization. Not only will this book enlightened as to the problems, but it will also furnish solutions in the form of alternatives. We trust the reader will find great benefit in this essential companion.
