Start when children are young these are the special years

I was late reviewing this item. I purchased it back when I needed to build up my book base for my Social Work degree. Many of the issues children have start in the early years of their developmental. Excellent Resource for Writers

If you've ever visited Bryn's website, you might already be familiar with some of her lists for writers. I love lists in general (proud Type-A), but she does more than just jot down quick lists. The lists in this book are detailed and categorized to create a fantastic reference book for writers. Sure, you could grab a thesaurus to try and find a better verb and spend hours flipping through it because none of them quite fit, or you could go right to this book and search by the emotion or action your character needs to convey.

In addition to word lists, the book has an extensive section on names - first AND last that includes their origins. No need to google the latest list of baby names when you can just open this book and find the perfect character names to fit into the time period of your book.

One of my favorite parts about the book are the plot lists. There are pages and pages of suggestions for action plots, romance plots, family plots, workplace plots. Every writer knows the only way to get better at writing is to write as often as possible. Grab this book, flip it open to one of the plot lists and use it for prompts. Or use the word lists as a jumping off point.

Another great thing about this book is reading the lists made me think of things I could add to them. If you ever feel like you're stuck, just read through one of the sections and it'll get your mind spinning with possibilities. I recommend this book for all writers. Great writing tool

Being a writer I was very excited when I found out about this book. Often, your brain needs a little help with expressing certain ideas or feelings. The book didn't disappoint. Extremely thorough and in the whole well organized. I have already used it while writing and I am certain it will hold a special place in my writing toolbox.

Bryn's collection of Master Lists is a fabulous heuristic tool. No more wracking your brain for the right turn of phrase -- Bryn has sorted and compiled everything from descriptive phrases, to plot summaries, to character traits and names... Writer's block? Just run your eye down one of Bryn's lists to discover a new jumping off point.

Of course, no book is going to do the work for you -- a writer has to write. But this resource is wonderful for helping the writer easily sift through word choices, compare connotations, or find new direction. Many thanks, Bryn, for putting these lists together! I know they will be consulted over and over.

Leckey's The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families.

The term Tenmile Country refers to an area of land in Greene and Washington counties in southwestern Pennsylvania that is traversed by Tenmile Creek. During the early colonial period, this region of the Upper Monongahela, like that of Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) slightly to the north and what would become Morgantown, West Virginia to the south, was inhabited by the indigenous peoples; by French missionaries, trappers, and traders; and eventually by a number of intrepid British "trans-Allegheny pioneers." After 1750, however, the Tenmile Country--like the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia-- became a desired place of settlement or stopover point for the huge migration of Scotch-Irish, German, and to a lesser extent, British, colonists who extended American settlement beyond the Alleghenies. Migration to the Monongahela took place over three main routes: along the National Pike via Winchester, Virginia; through the Shenandoah Valley to the head of the Cheat River and from there to the Monongahela; and along the Lincoln Highway to Ligonier, Pennsylvania and thence along Jacob's Creek to the Monongahela. From the time of the French and Indian War to the end of the 18th century, the tributaries of the Tenmile Creek would be inundated by pioneers--many of them German or Scotch Irish, some of them the spillovers from the great migration into Kentucky, and still other travellers and immigrants who passed through Baltimore en route to one of the great migration trails.

The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families was originally published as a series of newspaper articles by Mr. Leckey before being consolidated as a book in 1950 and then reprinted with an every-name index under the auspices of the Greene County Historical Society in 1977. The work commences with an historical overview of settlement in the Tenmile Country, and it concludes with the aforementioned index of some 30,000 entries. In between, the genealogist of southwestern Pennsylvania can savor 500 or more family histories, of varying lengths, which delineate the lineages of the many families who migrated into this area. The genealogies, which are arranged according to place of settlement, are periodically embellished with rosters of one sort or another, maps, facsimiles, and illustrations. Overall, the genealogical sketches cover or touch on more than 2,000 main families who settled in the Upper Monongahela during the final third of the eighteenth or first quarter of the nineteenth century. Without a doubt this is the starting point for genealogical research in southwestern Pennsylvania, and Clearfield Company is delighted to make it available again.
