Do you have a young writer in your house?

This is a superb book if you have an aspiring writer or just a child who likes to use words. It is laid out in a cute, fun and easy to read style. The pictures are delightful! Even if your child is a bit resistant to reading this book, the pictures will engage him or her.
You and your child will find such helpful information. He'll learn how to pick a subject and how to proofread a final draft. This book isn't just for the aspiriting author but is also wonderful to use in elementary school to get those papers done!
Your child will learn how to start a journal (a terrific way of expressing oneself), write a poem, (riddle or play) or write a fantasy story. He will also learn how to get ready to take a test with some test taking skills.
There is a section on how to use capital letters and punctuation and finally full color maps, an historical time-line and the metric system.
Other helpful sections in the book include helping your child manage his time, writing a speech. The one negative is that there is a section on using the card catelogue in the library. This book was written in 1995 and although many schools still use them, children are learning to look up books through the computer.
I definitely recommend this book to have in your home to help your child with his writing skills or to inspire the budding author. If you are a teacher this is a great book to have in the classroom.

A Personal Favorite from Way Back When

I was searching for this title to include in a personal essay (fittingly enough), and after I found it, I felt compelled to write a review. My parents got me this book after I showed an interest in writing during late grade school. I loved it. I devoured the sections on fiction and play writing and would leaf through the appendix just for fun. I returned to this book over and over again through middle school. One creative writing degree later, I think it's safe to say this book works! If you have a kiddo who's interested in writing (or who's simply inquisitive in general), I highly recommend you purchase this book for them. It's a great way to get kids inspired while giving them a bit of direction.

My girls are using this for my home schooled girls and son. The text is fun and easy to follow for many ages. I enjoy teaching our language using this book alone (4th-5th graders).

This is not a line-by-line recipe cookbook, but it contains detailed instructions on fermenting (or creating via fermentation) nearly every imaginable food or beverage. After a foreword by Michael Pollan, Katz ("Wild Fermentation") explores the scientific basis of fermentation, then gives details for creating everything from yogurts to prosciutto to wines, beer, and kombucha. He emphasizes how fermentation influenced human development. Used to preserve food, it affected human biology so that humans could eat foods that would be poisonous otherwise, and it had an impact on global human culture as a reflection of indigenous cultural identity. Simply put, fermentation allows lactic acid bacteria naturally found in the air to overcome and exclude bacteria that are harmful to humans, and it increases advantageous chemical compounds, such as vitamins, in the process. About the Author

Sandor Ellix Katz is a fermentation revivalist. A self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee, his explorations in fermentation developed out of overlapping interests in cooking, nutrition, and gardening. This book, originally published in 2003, along with his The Art of Fermentation (2012) and the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts. Art of Fermentation vs. Wild Fermentation

There have been several excellent reviews that list the strengths of The Art of Fermentation. I can only add one thing - the author does an excellent job of citing his sources. I really appreciate that he does so - it allows me to go back and check for new, updated research and expand my reading. I particularly appreciate this in his section on fermentation and health. He adamantly does not claim fermented foods area a panacea and is skeptical of some of the touted benefits of various foods (kombucha as a cure for diabetes, for example). He argues, quite successfully, that fermented foods have their place in a well balanced, healthy, diet and provides the studies, traditions, and first-hand knowledge that demonstrates why.

For those who are wondering which book would be the better choice, this book is not just an expanded version of Wild Fermentation. It's a different take on the subject that goes in depth in the process and concepts behind fermentation. Many different types of fermentation using different bases - grains, vegetables, fruit, etc - are explored. Be aware that this is not a cookbook or an introductory text, however. Traditional recipes are scarce. If you are looking for "add X tablespoon of salt to Y amount of cabbage" you will be disappointed. If you want to know about different fermentation methods used around the world so you can branch out in your own culinary experiments, this is the book for you.

If you're an absolute novice, Wild Fermentation is probably the better starting place. It gives recipes and walks you through the steps more than The Art of Fermentation. Once you've made a few things and want to know more, the Art of Fermentation will really come into it's own!

Introduction To Post-Pasteurianism

First off: this book is beautiful. Hardcover, with a series of full-color plates 1/3rd and 2/3rds through. For only twice the price of a flimsy paperback, you're investing in five hundred solidly-constructed pages that will last.

And a good thing, because this book is destined to be a classic.

You don't need to have read Katz' other work, Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods, to understand, appreciate, and use this book - it stands alone. If you already own Wild Fermentation, don't be put off by the duplication of some recipes in the Table of Contents. Yes, sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles are in here, but every section is greatly expanded with much more information and many more references. (Ever thought of using a layer of cooking oil as an airlock? Neither had I, but I'm going to try it!)

Speaking of references... the Resources, Glossary, and Works Cited chapters could keep you busy for a few years.

And yes: you will use this book. As Michael Pollan states in the well-written foreword, this is not one of those cookbooks you buy for the nice pictures and keep on your coffee table. This is a project manual. Fermentation is something you have to experience to understand, and Katz give you absolutely everything you need to get started. The first 67 pages are devoted entirely to the beginner, focusing not on specific recipes but on answering the inevitable questions: "WHY would I want to ferment food? is it safe? what equipment and general expertise do I need?"

Again from Pollan: "Katz writes about the transformative power of fermentation with such infectious enthusiasm that he makes you want to try things just to see what happens." This is so true. Even if you don't initially intend to, many of these 'recipes' are so simple and unintimidating (hard apple cider, mead, sauerkraut and its derivatives, sourdough) that it's hard to resist the urge to pick up a box of Mason jars and some fresh produce the next time you're at the grocery store. Many of us are experimenters at heart, and fermentation is the perfect mix of art and science to tap into this nature and inspire all kinds of crazy projects.

Already the neighborhood King of Kraut? I guarantee that this book will still have something for you. Chapter 12 - "Fermenting Meat, Fish, and Eggs" isn't enough? Turn to Chapter 13, for a short but serious discussion of what it takes to turn a fermentation hobby into a small business. Notes about scaleup, HACCP plans, and licensing are cool to read about, though I have no plans to open a tempeh factory anytime soon. Or how about Chapter 14 - "Non-Food Applications of Fermentation"? Again, I don't live on a farm, but it is neat to read about compost, silage, and bioremediation. (Surprise: Katz doesn't buy into corn ethanol biofuels)

While this is by no means a biology textbook, the scientific content is much improved over Wild Fermentation. Chapter 1 - "Fermentation as a Coevolutionary Force" is, in general, accurate and well-referenced. Katz is not a formally-trained scientist, but he does not shy away from technical details when they are helpful for understanding, and he shows respect for the scientific method and its results. See, for instance, his discussion of 'homofermentative' and 'heterofermentative' organisms in vegetable fermentation (pg 96), or of commercial starter cultures (pg 132).

If you subsist on white bread and margarine and bleach your cutting boards after every use, fermentation may not be the hobby for you. The first time I skimmed some strangely-textured yeast off of a crock of fermenting beets, I have to admit I was a little skeptical what those beets would look like when I pulled them out (they were absolutely delicious). While some of my more imaginative fermentation adventures have yielded delicious results, a few have been downright terrible (yep, ate them anyway!). If you don't see any issue with carving a bit of mold off some cheese or a piece of fruit instead of throwing it out, then you probably have what it takes.

Many (most?) of the poor reviews on Wild Fermentation are from people taking issue with Katz' lifestyle or philosophies. Many of his philosophical discussions in this book are backed up with hard science and references, so even those who found Wild Fermentation to be overbearing may find this new book to be more palatable. If you have some problem with the fact that Katz has HIV (he states this outright in the new book, and includes a sidebar about how fermented foods may be helpful but they are not a disease cure), do the rest of us a favor and keep it to yourself.

I've been experimenting with fermentation for about a year, relying mostly on Wild Fermentation and a substantial collection of online resources. I've only had this book for a week, and I've already had tons of fun and learned a lot. When I'm finished with my read-through, this book will definitely be making its rounds among my friends. A great reference and a worthwhile investment - highly recommended.

Best Book on Fermentation Currently Available

Fermentation was frankly something I had little to no experience or interest in until a few years ago....even then it was a slow progression. For health reasons (we're not getting any younger) we started taking an active interest in food - both the quality of the food and the preparation practices. The more we learned, the more we started cooking, baking and making our own food.

Bread was perhaps one of the very first things we took the time to make from scratch and soon the bread baking became a weekly tradition. Fresh baked bread is so delicious, warm and comforting. Of course, that led to grinding our own flour and since bread is so much like beer - my spouse began experimenting with home brewed beer and wine and even soda. It wasn't long before something always seemed to be brewing in the kitchen and at least one of us, was quickly becoming a fermentation fan.

Over those few years, our diet, shopping habits, food choices and preparation methods changed fairly radically from what we had thought was a decent diet to an all organic, homemade diet with local produce when possible. It was during that time I started hearing more and more about the benefits of fermentation of other foods - but frankly, not having grown up around anything remotely related to food preparation, I had no idea what was/wasn't fermented. In fact, I thought pickles were always made with vinegar and canned - I had no idea they were fermented. Ditto for sauerkrout or oodles of other items. Somewhere along the line, I came across Sandor's first book on fermentation and purchased it. It was NOT love at first sight...in fact, after the first read, I thought it sounded horrible (rotted food?!) and set it aside for at least another year.

Then by chance, I happened to taste some REAL pickles..then fermented salsa and several other things that just knocked my socks off. I pulled that book out and decided to give it a try. Low and behold, it worked like a charm!

Soon I was buying big fermentation pots and since then we have become regular consumers of fermented products made a home. I then bought the book and video set and several other books on fermentation...in fact, by this point, I probably own most of the major books about fermentation. So, when this came up as an advanced order option, I purchased it right away although I wasn't sure what to expect. It was delivered early and right from the start, it is obvious this book is MUCH larger than previous books. It provides a exemplary overview of fermentation from both a historical perspective as well as current uses around the globe. The information expands upon the understanding of fermentation in a dramatic way. It's both interesting and informative. Without a doubt, it's one of the best books I've read on the subject and I've read a LOT of them!

Now, if you are just wanting an introduction to fermentation with a few quick and easy recipes' and examples, the older books by Katz are probably still your best choice. On the other hand, if you are a person that likes to understand a topic in depth when starting something new, this may be more to your liking.

Existing fermentation fans will ABSOLUTELY want to purchase this new book for the expanded knowledge, information and insight. It will not disappoint!

      On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, just five days after the end of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a bitter Confederate sympathizer named John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln became an instant martyr, immortalized as the "The Great Emancipator."

     After Lincoln's assassination, the commonest of men tried to fill the gigantic void. Andrew Johnson, a self-educated tailor from Tennessee, became the 17th President of the United States, and the first to enter office after the murder of his predecessor. Rising above an impoverished childhood, Johnson was truly a self-made man, learning a useful trade and developing his own successful business. At the same time, he rapidly ascended the poltical ladder--Alderman, Mayor, State Legislator, Congressman, Governor of Tennessee, United States Senator, Military Governor of Union-occupied Tennessee, Vice-President, and President of the United States.

As the only lawmaker from the South to remain in Congress after the outbreak of the Civil War, Andrew Johnson was the ultimate "Loyalist." In recognition for his dedication to the Union, Johnson was nominated as Abraham Lincoln's running mate in the 1864 presidential election. Barely a month into his vice-presidency, Johnson was thrust on the center stage of America politics.

      After Lincoln was murdered, the tailor from Tennessee ascended into the unenviable position of succeeding a legend. Johnson's obstinancy and rigid interpretaion of the Constitution soon placed him at odds with the Republican congression leadership and the national press. The bitter chasm widened as the Johnson presidency lurched forward, and ultimately led to his being the first President in American history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. By a single vote, Johnson avoided conviction by the Senate, and forfeiture of of office.

     After narrowly surving this constitutional crisis, Johnson's historical legacy was irrevocably damaged, and his hopes for an elected term as President were dashed. Returning to Tennessee after his presidency, Johnson was determined to return to political office. In remarkable fashion, he was elected to the United States Senate, marking the first and only time that a former President has returned to serve in that legislative body. Ambitous, lacking humility, and largely humorless, Johnson was unable to tolerate criticism. He angrily attacked his foes, once likening himself to Christ on the Crucifix. His combative personality and intemperate remarks readily allowed his enemies to portray him as vindictive and unstable.

     The Loyalist:  The Life and Times of Andrew Johnson is a concise biography of the 17th President of the United States, focusing upon the tumultuous years surrounding the American Civil War. Sustained by courage and ambition, Johnson was inevitably doomed by petulance, leading to a remarkable rise, dramatic fall, and partial vindication.

Another Great Book by Dr. Smith

This is an entertaining and well written book about Andrew Johnson. Born into abject poverty and forced to work at a very early age, the self-educated and shrewd Johnson achieved amazing success in both business and politics. Never one to back away from confrontation, Johnson's stubborness eventually cost him an elected term as President and opened the door for hard line northern politicians to implement harsh post war policies in the former Confederate states. Dr. Smith's book tells the story of the tumultous life and times of one of the South's most controversial figures. A very good read that is sure to enlighten.

Great insight into Andrew Johnson

I have read several books on Andrew Johnson and have to say this is by far the best. History has painted Johnson poorly and this book puts Johnson in a better perspective then many of the other books. Highly recommend. A good read for finding out what happened after Lincoln was killed and how Johnson tried to help bring the Union back together. Look forward to reading more books Dr. Smith.

The Loyalist

This book portrays Andrew Johnson's life, beliefs, and actions as president following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. As a lover of history I found this book intriguing and enlightening. During the difficult times of Andrew Johnson's presidency it is amazing to me that the country survived. Johnson endured the contempt of many Americans including many in Congress which dealt him the blow of impeachment. He was a southerner and yet stood with the north on preserving the union and protecting the constitution. Through this book, I gained an understanding of Johnson's character and strength and have a picture of a man who was thrust into an extremely difficult situation through no fault of his own.

About the Author
Rubin Battino MS has a private practice and is also Adjunct Professor for the Department of Human Services at Wright State University. He has over ten years of experience as a facilitator in a Bernie Siegel style support group, is President of the Milton H. Erickson Society of Dayton and was co-chair of a committee to establish certification standards for training in Ericksonian hypnotherapy. Thomas L. South has a PhD in clinical psychology and has taught courses in Ericksonian hypnotherapy at the University of Dayton and at Wright State University. He is a founder and first president of the Milton H. Erickson Society of Dayton, Ohio.

Hypnosis is as old as the human race. The phenomenon known as hypnosis has existed since the beginning of recorded history, as found in the folklore of ancient cultures. In ancient times, as well as in the "primitive" tribes of today, it has been and continues to be associated with religious ceremonies, magic, the supernatural, and the occult. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks had dream centers (Udolf, 1981) where people came to fast and pray with the hope that their dreams could be interpreted so as to solve their problems and give them guidance. Under these circumstances their dreams were probably hypnotically induced. Even today, Hindu medicine men practice their ageless forms and variations of hypnosis for healing purposes. Magicians in the time of Genghis Khan (Erickson and Rossi, 1980, Vol. III, p. 3) practiced group suggestion to obtain visual and auditory hallucinations. According to Marco Polo, medieval men used hypnosis in mystic rites to produce fear and to intensify beliefs in the supernatural and the occult. With this long history of supernaturalism and mysticism, it is no wonder that the general public's attitude toward hypnosis, as well as that of many professionals, has been and, to a certain extent, still is one of misunderstanding, antagonism and fear.

I wonder if you can imagine

I first heard of Milton H. Erickson through NLP. The Milton model of nlp is named after Milton Erickson who used artfully vague language language patterns to put patients in trance. My Voice Will Go with You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Ericksonby Sidney Rosen fueled my initial curiosity. That book focused mainly on Erickson's storytelling method, and his often counterintuitive yet incredibly effective approach to therapy, often through using healing metaphors.

I found his skill with language patterns particularly fascinating, and inspiring, although there is far more to Erickson's approaches than that.

So, when I trained in nlp and hypnotised many people practising with his scripts, I was quite astounded at how effective his indirect approach was in putting people in trance. I don't know if you can imagine how much fun it was learning how to stack metaphors, and use embedded commands.

A professional hypnotherapist and fellow trainer on my course recommended this book, saying it was better than any other four books about Erickson, and that it also could be used as a teaching manual.

Erickson's daughters Roxanna and Betty contribute a foreword to this book, as does Ernest Rossi. If both of Milton's daughter use this book as a training manual at their institute, then....

I own many books on Erickson, and my friend is quite correct. This book is better any other four books on Erickson.

If you are wondering about how this book relates to nlp, the authors do cover the different language patterns in much detail, and even explain the meta model. In this book I particularly like the popcorn metaphor. You might wonder what eating popcorn has to do with premature ahem closure, you'll wander know more after reading that segment.

No stone is left unturned by the authors in putting together this truly brilliant and comprehensive manual. It is my pleasure to recommend this book, and the other one I mentioned, as two must own books on Erickson.

If you are not already a trained hypnotherapist, may I say from personal experience, there is no substitute for taking a hypnosis or nlp training.

A person can learn many things..and a curious person can learn so much, and when you go deep inside it's like something opens up, and the more you open up to the opportunities the more opportunities open up, and you discover you're developing new neural connections...new perceptions..new understandings that will fuel your curiosity even further...

This manual is truly a Master work... the book touches on everything from early history of hypnosis, NLP language patterns, metaphor, inductions, etc. The book is written in language very easy to read and understand. The ideas are brought forward very clearly, and one gets a sense of the personality and substance of the authors themselves. There are many books out there about Erickson, his work and techniques... This one should be at the top of any list and a must have for the library of every practitioner of the art.

She supports and promotes awareness for Autism and often volunteers for various awareness causes and events.

Besides writing, she loves to travel and explore new places where she draws her inspiration from. She has an aesthetic style of writing that is so reflected in her novels, short-stories and the vivid characters she portrays.

The book has a beautiful cover..! I read her previous novel too and could not wait to read this one. Her stories are very intriguing, simple and fresh.Characters are believable and interesting. I just loved reading this one. After very busy months of work I craved for a subtle romance novel and the book worked well. Author is very talented and amazing. Waiting for the next one.!

A winner that has been improved

I loved the 2008 edition of this book. It was an excellent, comprehensive and clear guide to starting and running an import/export business. But it was getting a bit out of date (I missed the 2012 edition), so I picked this one up. It's every bit as good as the original, plus includes important recent material, plus has been expanded in other ways.

The definitions, both in the text and in the glossary, help a beginner make sense of the often confusing jargon. The examples are just complex enough to be useful, no more. The organization is logical. Despite the "for Dummies" label, this book can bring you the entire way from beginner to expert. It starts from the beginning, teaches you the basics, tells you what else you need to know, and where to go to get it. You don't need a book that lists all information anyone in Import/Export would ever want, and if you had one it would be out of date immediately.

This book is written for the do-it-yourselfer who knows something about some product or market and wants to understand the entire Import/Export process. It does not assume you work for a company with specialists, or that you're going to subcontract out much of the work. It does not assume you have any experience seeing this done. To the extent you do have some knowledge, this book will show you how to leverage that in your business attempt.

Since 2008, the world has changed a lot, particularly in East and Central Asia: more challenges, more opportunities. Regulations and government assistance have actually simplified a bit, but competition is more intense and more varied. This book covers the changes clearly and comprehensively.

Overall, this is a great text for a beginner in import/export, a valuable reference to an expert and a handy combination for everyone in between.

This book draws on the author's real-world experience and many years of teaching this subject at colleges in the New York area. It's an easy-to-understand one-stop resource for anyone considering entering the world of global commerce as an importer or exporter. It serves the newcomer as well as the experienced importer or exporter in serving up many useful tips on how not to get ripped off or tripped up on legal requirements. Very helpful is a chapter on ten "keys" on becoming successful in this business. Prof. Capela has taught thousands of men and women from all walks of life and business experience to get involved in international commerce and his book is filled with case studies and examples from his vast experience. Resources for further information are included at the end of the book. In all, a very useful guide for the global entrepreneur or would-be entrepreneur. Hightly recommended!

This book is absolutely amazing. Being a novice I knew very little about import/export, but this book really hit a home run. It takes you through all of the important information that you really need to know about the subject.

The section about rules and regulations in this book was very important and informative. How to organize your import and export operation was illuminating.

Of special interest was the chapter about Ali Baba.com. The process of doing research on this site was very interesting and certainly worthwhile reading.

One of the most important chapters was “identifying your target market and finding customers”. This without a doubt is the key to any successful business. In this chapter the author for gives you some real world pointers on how to go about this process.

The chapter on “negotiating around the world” was very interesting. It pointed out things that I was not aware.

This book really takes you from the beginning stages of what you need to know to becoming a successful importer/exporter. The book ‘import/export kit for dummies “is a gold mine of information. I would highly recommend this book to others. The author seems to really know his stuff and his market.

Thorough history from the beginning

This is a review of the 1977 edition. I'm sure there is a latter edition, and probably due for an update.
Fairly serious, text book, and perhaps best in the early years, including folk, ragtime, blues and African influences. Liberally sprinkled with great photos, some early ones include a 1895 photo of Buddy Bolten and a 1923 photo of King Oliver band with Louis Armstrong. This book is probably most geared for the musician, with transcriptions from Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane as well as many shorter musical passages through the text.
Although I'm sure everyone find some of their favorite musicians missing, Tirro offers many perspectives and tries to relate jazz to other cultural happenings, such as beat poets. His chapter on "Loose Ends" attempts to fill in some of his omissions. I would have liked to have seen more discussion on the role of evolving technology, for example without the more modern microphone a crooner like Frank Sinatra wouldn't have stood out. I found his chronology and discography very helpful in keeping the history and music in context. Readers would do well to have a copy of The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz to listen along with the reading.

A potpourri of Jazz Music, Theory and History

While not exactly the full story of America's only classical music, this loose collection of short bios of the key players, histories, vignettes, musical charts and themes, comes very close to telling the complete story of the music. All that is missing is a social backdrop, a plot, a subplot, a theme: a reason d'etre for Jazz's emergence and existence.

I believe the only mistake of an otherwise fine book was to leave as an exercise for the reader, or perhaps for the "real" historians, rather than for this musicologist, the unravelling of the connection between American society and the development of America's original classical music. Obviously the one affected the other, greatly. To the extent Jazz is uniquely American music, formulated in the European tradition, it could only have become what it is because of the peculiarities of American society itself. Thus to have avoided even venturing into speculative mention of how the social context of American society inevitably led to Jazz's development and has since affected its progression throughout, is to leave the only hole in an otherwise fine example of American musicology.

This rather glaring omission is all the more obvious given the evolutionary track that Jazz's development took: from African rhythms, calls and responses, to slave field chants, to black prison chain gang work songs, to New Orleans funereal marches, to the blues of those on the outskirts of main stream American society, to the big bands of the 1920-30s, to bop and bebop of the late 40s and 50s, to the modern progressive jazz innovations that followed. Even in relief, this evolutionary track allowed the reader to understand the most important history about Jazz only by reading between the lines, where he could then see the connections between the music and the larger societal forces that actually produced it. It seems to me that this missing connection to the music is one of the most important elements in fully understanding the true meaning of the music itself?

In this same regard, I have a theory that inner city "Rap" music also emerged as a result of similar societal constraints: Due to tax constraints because of "white flight" from America's inner cities, ghetto kids no longer have valid music programs in their greatly diminished schools. All one needs to do to understand the effect of this, is go to a patriotic holiday parade in an inner city and see that the inner city schools no longer have instruments. They show up with drill teams,teams of baton twirlers and drum corps, all without musical instruments and with very little musical training. Again, only in relief does one then understand why and how "rap" had to be invented to fill that gap. The racist rules of American society have never been trivial in such instances.

With that beef out of the way, what this book brings to the party is the ability to summarize the meaning of the music and its theory at each cusp in the evolutionary tree in short pithy (though often inelegant) pieces; and to link these with insider understanding of the relevant aspects of the music business itself, aspects that were also pivotal to the almost random directions the Jazz trajectory took (but again the element of race is carefully avoided).

At every turn, these mostly black musicians were constrained both in their creativity and in their ability to make a living out of the art they produced by the peculiar racist constraints of American society. Thus, at least as interesting as the history and the music itself, is the way in which the rules of society cramped the music and the musicians on both sides of the color divide. For instance, rather surprisingly, the musical groups were racially integrated as far back as the turn of the century with brisk collaboration going on between musicians even while the society itself remained in the racial dark ages. Unfortunately, a great deal of this collaboration was unidirectional often resulting in whites either ignoring or "appropriating" much of the "colored creations."

They did so for no reason other than, because "society said that they could." Black musicians on the other hand were constantly being harassed with petty societal rules and requirements from, cabaret licenses, to segregated facilities, to having to join unions that only wanted their dues, to frequently being cheated and being grossly underpaid for their creative outputs compared to their white counterparts. It is unfortunate that the book just ignored the hoops and barriers that those who produced this music (often more appreciated in other lands than at home) had to go through to produce it. It's not the most comprehensive book around but it was indeed one of the best at the time

This was one of my textbooks as an ethnomusiccology student at Purdue back in 1981. I remember the book to be very informative and enjoyable. It's not the most comprehensive book around but it was indeed one of the best at the time. Read this book and "Blues People" and you got ALL the info you need about the evolution of jazz!
