His research interests include machine learning-based power/thermal optimization algorithms, narrow-channel high-speed wireless interconnects, and information retrieval in dense sensor networks. Rahul is member of IEEE and the recipient of three Intel Achievement Awards for his contributions in areas related to advancements of platform technologies. He is the author of A Vision for Platform Autonomy: Robust Frameworks for Systems.

Can't Fail

First I have to tell you that I have NEVER used Flash. We were in a meeting, and we were trying to figure out how to deliver a presentation on our construction company's portfolio to a tech-savvy client. I said, "let's make a Flash-movie slideshow with the photos we have and we'll e-mail it out to them". I said I could make something basic but still slick, in the 2 weeks we had until they wanted to make contact.

Again, no Flash experience, and I just committed to getting this important marketing piece done - now concerned that I might have been overselling my abilities. What did I do? Besides downloading a 30 Flash CS4 day trial from Adobe's website, I did what I always do - I bought a book! I made a whole stack at the bookstore, and sat in the cafe in the store looking through all of them to make sure I got the best book - the one that would make me successful. Some were very high-tech, one looked like greek, one was too cartoony and silly, and then Rich Shupe's book "Learning Flash CS4", the companion book to "Learning ActionsScript 3.0", just stood out. His tone was calm, the instructions were basic, and it included a book-long project with several major Flash components like embedded movie clips, kinematics, sound with controls, tweening. Pretty much everything someone might want to do, with sample files available at each stage from their website, to help check your work.

Any expert would say the book was light on explanations and detail, but when you are starting out, you need just enough to get it working, and you know someday you'll understand because Rich tells you so; sprinkled around are subtle encouragements like "you'll learn more about that in a later chapter, for now just do it this way" kind of statements. And at the end of each chapter there is a review, and an explanation of how what you learned fits in to what you are about to learn.

I am a learn by doing, learn by example kind of person. I dabble here in anything they'll let me try. By Chapter 6, I had an intro page, 5 icon buttons to navigate with, a short interval of tweened animation (a silhouetted airplane flying in - large at stage right, to small at stage left, as though it is flying in over your shoulder), two slideshows with their own controls, a page that launches to our corporate website, and an animated intro where our logo fades in, with a slogan appearing one word at a time, and then dropping stage right with an intro message.

Also, now I know just enough ActionScript to be dangerous from this book, but I plan to buy the companion book, Learning ActionScript 3.0, as well - it is a few months older, but ActionScript 3.0 is what Flash CS4 uses, so I can't imagine there is any issue there.

This book is just enough instruction to be successful and understand all the concepts, not overwhelmed with detail. The author speaks plainly but without condescension. You are encouraged but not overtly cheerfully. It gives you the concepts and assumes you will know how to apply them to your own work - just my style. I am not sure I would have been as successful with another book - this one was perfect.

Learning Flash CS4 Professional is not quite the all you need manual for the entire Flash program but it does contain plenty for basic programming and plenty of help to program Flash. The book is a companion to Learning ActionScript 3.0 if you want to take your Flash animations to the next level but for basic and main stream animations and video this book is more than enough.

Learning Flash CS4 does not go into depth for handheld device websites or other Flash features as it is just too big a subject to contain in one book. It does go through flash animations and website design using Flash CS4 so you can create your own Flash videos with sound and even webpages.

Learning Flash CS4 Professional will take you from installation of the up to date Flash CS4 program to the final publishing of your Flash animation to Dreamweaver or into a file. The book will walk you through steps necessary to create, edit and work on an animation, movie or video that you create with Flash to make your websites and projects professional.

While the book takes you through their project you can easily adapt what you learn or use chapters and sections for your own projects just as I have done. From first opening and organizing Flash you can easily get used to and familiar with the windows, menus and parts of Flash easily and quickly.

Learning Flash CS4 takes you from importing their project files just as you would any images or parts of an animation from your files or the internet and start to organize and work on a final project for a website. You can readily adapt the project they have to any one you may want to create as all the aspects and techniques they use would be the same for any given project you may want to create.

Instead of working on their project I went directly to mine and used their steps throughout the book to get my own Flash animation up and running. Using the book is pretty easy to answer questions, get help and as a general reference and how to guide for simple to complex animations and full websites based on Flash.

Learning Flash CS4 has plenty of helpful advice and does take you through processes like creating simple flash animations, developing movement for animations like robotic arms and even on to using basic ActionScript. ActionScript is the programming language of Flash and having a basic knowledge of it will help you understand and be able to use and troubleshoot problems in Flash better.

The book does contain enough ActionScript basics to use for simple animations and up to the more complex things like Kinematics or motion like that robotic arm but does not go into detail. For further detail if you need it you would should purchase that Learning ActionScript book but I found that this book serves well for basic animations and using Flash.

Don't let the inverse kinetics part fool you or worry you though, the book starts off simple and gives you detailed yet intelligent information about setting up and using Flash CS4 from the start. It goes through not in a step by step tutorial fashion but tells you all you need to know to get from one part to the next in clear language that is not dumbed down nor too hard to understand.

I had no problems not having a clue about Flash before installing it and picking up this book to learn how to use this animation program. I have never used flash before, only installed Flash player on computers for use in browsers so I know that this is good enough for this complete beginner of Flash to learn with.

The book tells and shows you all you need to know for simple animations and the more complex parts of sites such as animated text, sound and 3 dimensional animations. The book also goes along with the companion website [...] so you have a place to go for questions and help if you don't understand something in the book.

You can even see the project website as it is created throughout the book from this website so if you do not have a website to host the project on conveniently you can see in real time on the internet what the project looks like. The website is a real treasure trove of up to date information about Flash CS4 and helpful hints, tips and a way to contact the author for additional help.

Learning Flash CS4 Professional may be a bit intimidating if you pick up the book and flip through the pages, lots of code and several chapters with lots of programming language. The author steps you through all this from the simple starting point of importing the project files, or your own graphics and files, and moving on in a logical sequence that will have you working in Flash like a pro in no time.

This is one program that just screams manual required to do anything in and Learning Flash CS4 Professional is just the in depth and basic knowledge filled book to meet that need. If you own or work with Flash CS4 this is just the kind of book you need not only as a first time manual and guide but as a great reference to keep handy for those questions and problems in Flash that crop up all the time.

I highly recommend Learning Flash CS4 Professional by Rich Shupe as a great manual for Flash CS4 to really help you understand and use animations in your website.

Organic food for the Flash mind

Coming back to Flash after a five-year hiatus (Flash 5) and knowing how much it has evolved, I needed a solid introductory text to review and update my knowledge. Rich Shupe has given us a great one!

The clarity and depth of explanation, smooth progression of topics, anticipation of questions (at least this student's), and the general feeling of organic wholeness make reading and using this book a joy. Besides the new features of Flash CS4, I've already learned some things about core Flash concepts that I've never seen explained in any other introductory book I've read (e.g., a detailed explanation of how merged drawing's editing behavior actually works).

You can't judge a book by its thickness. This one is like a great tasting power bar--all the goodness and flavor without the non-nutritional fillers. For example, you'll find no long-winded "Click OK" step-by-steps in the tutorial sections. Instead the author treats you with intelligence and encourages you to experiment.

It's all here. A great book by a real teacher.

Framing White Supremacy through the Hegelian Dialectic

Dr. Robert Young, the pre-eminent renaissance man of an intellectual, here warms up for his own intellectual tour de force "Mental Spaces" in this trenchant reassessment of the Hegelian/Marxist dialectic as being the most accurate representation to be used to deconstruct Western history as we have come to know it.

My assessment of this analysis goes as follows: There are simple (or piecewise) and complex (holistic reassessment through deconstruction) ways of assessing and referring to broad changes in the history of the world. The most complex and perhaps the most problematic (and now surely the most controversial, intellectually), is accepting, as an unexamined and unchallenged given, implicit meanings and understandings that are left standing as a part of the metaphysic of white supremacy -- which has emerged, de facto, as the only way of framing world culture. An alternative is to review and examine with a skeptical eye all the meanings and implicit ways of conceptualizing and organizing the world that this mystique has handed down to us.

Oddly, other than the Marxist dialectic (following on the heels of Hegel), history does not provide any natural ways or tools for demystifying what has been handed down to us as founding mythologies (or white male hero stories that have been rendered universal). Even to think about "getting beneath" this mystique amounts to a kind of anti-patriotic (or anti-humanistic) heresy that in fact when viewed honestly constitutes nothing less than a revolution in political thought.

White history simply comes handed down to us "pre-cooked," as already pre-digested knowledge: as "texts" or canons, indeed as a white male generated metaphysic already embedded within a ready-made socio-political and cultural context: What we have bequeathed to us as history, to write and talk about is co-terminus with existing white generated history and thus is already prejudged and profoundly biased narratives and texts. There is nothing else? No alternatives for cutting through this conceptual Gordian knot?

The best example of how this phenomenon works occurs in the case of religion (which is pretty much what white supremacy is), where a canon of theology based on a "book" (only in this case "the book" is all world history) existing above the plane of skeptical enquiry, is simply handed down uncritically as the existing unchallenged corpus of knowledge. So long as "God's existence" (however god may be defined), goes unchallenged, everything remains "upright" with the world. Challenging these controlling canonical assumptions however is a kind of deep conceptual heresy that threatens to fragment the edifice of knowledge -- in this case religious orthodoxy -- into the kind of chaos that it actually represents today. And as we know, fragmentation and chaos are not to be allowed as part of founding myths.

On a broader scale, the same theological paradigm applies to the unfolding of history -- the history of ideas and historicity more generally. What this author (and others like him) have discovered (and are trying to tell us) is that the whole of our historical, political and social knowledge - from the feudal, to the modern, and now to the post-modern eras, has been caught up in broad sets of pre-digested narratives that frame our worldview and understanding at a very deep almost metaphysical level. These built-in understandings are little more than mostly false mythologies about the meaning of male dominated white supremacy. As we are slowly discovering, they are "oppressively controlled knowledge systems" that have little or nothing at all to do with the realities that underlie them. Yet, it is these mythologies that "program" the minds of Western as well as non-Western cultures in the ways of the world.

For the most part, and at the same very fundamental level, these "knowledge projects" and their "products" are invariably about "unacknowledged systems of power and the politics" that have come to not so quietly rule the world. But importantly, they also rule the way we produce narratives that would allow us to understand and reassess what has happened in the past? The post-modern theorists refer to these "knowledge projects" as theories because that is pretty much what they are: implicit built-in assumptions about the way knowledge is to be conveyed in order to maintain in a steady state certain systems and "ways of power" and "ways of maintaining social order" - all of which have come to be seen as universal.

An important subtheme of the book is that Marx, by conflating various chauvinisms (like race and sex) into "class struggles," actually missed the trees for the forest. The devil Young claims lies in the details of the grid that slices and dices cultures into their constituent parts, of which class is just one of many overlapping categories. According to Young (now finally donning his Psychologist hat), almost everything in male superiority paradigms can be said to reduce to a phallo-logocentric Hegelian dialectic about Sartre's "Other." That is to say, the process by which the "Other" is made real in male superiority systems is through the "superior alpha male's fear" of the sexually threatening "outsider."

This according to Young is the sole dynamic that defines and controls everything in the white supremacy system. Said differently, the dialectic between "the other" and the "superior Alpha male beings" within the superior defined cultures, is basically a Freudian sex complex, one in which "the other" is both a threatening "object" and a "subject," simultaneously a threat and society's resolution to it. It is this subconscious sexual dialectic lying unacknowledged in the subtext, rather than Marx's class struggle, that is both the controlling metaphor as well as the controlling dynamic of all cultures based on male dominated supremacy (which is to say all of them).

It should come as a surprise to no one that at least in the modern era (from the post-feudal era onwards) the controlling knowledge system, the controlling mythology, has been the unwritten and unacknowledged (political) theory of white male sexual supremacy. It alone frames and defines what is referred to as Western Civilization which comes to us pre-cooked as the "default culture of the world." As this author, as well as most Marxists analysts tell us, white supremacy has been best manifested and expressed in the pre-colonial era as the Western slave trade, the socio-economic and cultural system that (along with Newton's science) brought us fully into the modern era that gave us slavery as the first global economic commodity, and with it the ideas of progress, social and economic order based on racial hierarchies, the idea that progress means expansion by conquest, Protestantism, capitalism, etc.

But this author tells us that an even more general paradigm underlies this system of mythologies. The history of progress as we have come to know it does not just depend on the white sexual metaphysic, but also more generally on the hierarchical structures in which the social order that metaphysic creates. It is the dialectic in this discourse that defines the parameters of the system of power: the categories and gives them names, structures the rules and power relationships, and assigns meanings to all the processes that constitute the system.

The globalized colonial world that that the system of power called "White Supremacy" brought into being, was (and still remains) a de facto global political and cultural system: "The final "theory" about how the world is to be organized, one that still frames our knowledge about the world and about the way "systems of power "ought to operate." Except that it is all a carefully orchestrated lie. 100 stars

Oh WOW!!! I have always been curious about Sam since his ending with Izzy was a little sudden, and boy does Chelle fill us in. This is a short novella, but it is FULL of the good stuff and its AMAZING!

Sam is such a mans man. He loves women, beer, and bikes. Ive always liked Sam even through his issues with Izzy. This little story just makes me love him even more. Needing to get away for a few days and mend his broken heart he heads to New Orleans. That is where he meets the beautiful Fiona. INSTANT CHEMISTRY!!! Gah!!! He falls for the naughty nurse and its amazing!

Fiona. What a woman! Needing to just have a good time she heads out to a bar and finds Sam. Their humor together and banter is just cute and funny. They both have what each other needs. Just when you think she couldn't get any better with Fiona, she finds a way to warm your heart more. Getting Sam back together with the Gallo men.

I really loved this little short story. Chelle can always get her point across and make you fall for her characters easily. Way to go Miss Bliss, you freakin ROCKED IT AGAIN!!!!!

A fantastic quick and sexy read!

Rebound is a novella in the Men Of Inked series by Chelle Bliss.  It is book 4.5 in the series.  Rebound is told through the main character Sam's POV.

Sam recently had his heart broken and went off to New Orleans thinking be was going to drown his sorrows the whole weekend.  That was until someone very unexpected sat down next to him in a bar.  Fiona. Both having had their hearts broken, they strike up a conversation.  Deciding to head out so Fiona can show Sam more of New Orleans, this just might be the unexpected that they both needed, but didn't know they were looking for. 

I really, really, enjoyed this novella.  It was a quick read, but it was packed with more sexiness and romance than ten full length novels! This is the first book that I've read from Chelle Bliss and I am very eager to read more from her! I'll leave you with one of my favorite lines: Sometimes you find someplace, someone that makes you feel at home, and you just need to grab it by the reins and hold on for the crazy-ass ride called life.
