Outstanding books for beginners!!!!

I was a "dummy" when it came to pc basics. I wanted to know Ram, rom, whats on the motherboard, etc. I wanted to know my Dell 4100 inside and out. Thanks to Mr. Gookin's excellent book, I am on my way to becoming very good friends with the very computer that once intimidated the heck out of me. He talks in, depth (but doesnt go so far as to confuse the beginner with a lot of geek jargon), and with humor, all you need to know about your computer so you can feel confident about using it. Youre not going to be a techinician when youre done with this book, but after reading it, you will be able to go to the local computer store with confidence and talk their language and not get the runaround. If every computer were to come with an instruction book, this one should be it!! Hats off to Dan Gookin and IDG books for such an excellent book. I look forward to reading Upgrading and Fixing Pc's For Dummies next!

basic information, will help you get started with PCs

This book is aimed at complete beginners, which is not a bad thing; too few computer books really are. It covers the basics of how to use a computer (with an emphisis on the XP OS). Covers basic hardware and software, what part of the computer does what, the difference between an OS and application software (many people don't have a clue) and other basics. It won't make you a computer geek, but it will certainly, for many people, increase thier computer literacy significantly.

Particularly valuable for most people will be the explination of the basic hardware and software, as opposed to the basic instructions for using XP. I work in an office supply store that sells PC components, and I'm always amazed when people don't know the difference between RAM and their processor. The basic, painless, introduction to the hardware would alone be worth the price of the book. He details most of the major PC components well enough that you understand what role they perform in running your PC. He's also good about explaining basic software categories (i.e., an OS as opposed to an application program).

The instructions for using XP (Managing files, etc.) are basic enough that they could probably have been left out, as most people figure it out pretty easily and intuitively.

Overall, the writing is done tolerably well, and in an easy manner that doesn't intimidate or condescend, which is nice. The information is sound, and basic, enough to provide a good foundation of knowledge so that you are not totally in the dark about your PC.

Bottom line? If you don't understand what a processor is, or the difference between XP and Office, buy this book. It will help. If you can't tell the difference between RAM and your hard drive, buy this book. It'll make the computer age easier on you .

GREAT GUIDE FOR THOSE WHO ARE "TECH CHALLENGED"

Purchased a new computer and Windows XP is no longer an option. Having heard many stories about VISTA, I chose WINDOWS 7. When the computer arrived, the format is very different from what I was use to on XP and being Tech Challenged I ordered this book. It is GREAT!!!!! Gives you step by step help in a language easy to understand. I highly suggest to anyone who is not a Tech sWizard to get this if switching from an old Windows system to WINDOWS 7.

About the Author
Dr. William A. Haviland is Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for thirty-two years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has carried out original research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of numerous publications in various national and international books and journals, as well as in media intended for the general public. His books include The Original Vermonters, co-authored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He also served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse, Faces of Culture, and is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Besides his teaching and writing, Dr. Haviland has lectured to numerous professional as well as non-professional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. A staunch supporter of indigenous rights, he served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenakis of Vermont in an important court case over aboriginal fishing rights. Awards received by Dr. Haviland include being namedUniversity Scholar by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine. His most recent book is At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009).

Dr. Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Kansas State University. Born in the Netherlands, he studied at universities in Europe and the United States. He has done extensive fieldwork among indigenous peoples in South and North America, published many dozens of articles in seven languages, authored The Mi’kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival (1996), co-authored Indians in Eden (2009), and co-edited American Beginnings (1994) and other books. Also trained in film, he has made award-winning documentaries and served as president of the Society for Visual Anthropology and visual anthropology editor of the American Anthropologist. Dr. Prins has won his university’s most prestigious undergraduate teaching awards, held the Coffman Chair for University Distinguished Teaching Scholars (2004–2005), and was selected as Professor of the Year for the State of Kansas by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2008. Active in human rights, he served as expert witness in Native rights cases in the U.S. Senate and various Canadian courts, and was instrumental in the successful federal recognition and land claims of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs (1991). Dr. Prins was appointed Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (2008–2011), and served as guest professor at Lund University in Sweden (2010).

Bunny McBride, who holds a Master’s Degree from Columbia University, is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. Highly rated as a teacher, she served as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College, the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies, and since 1996 as adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. McBride’s many publications include Women of the Dawn (1999), Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris (1995), and Indians in Eden: Wabanakis and Rusticators on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, 1850s–1920s (co-authored, 2009). The Maine State legislature awarded her a special commendation for significant contributions to Native women’s history (1999). A community activist and researcher for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs (1981–1991), McBride assisted this Maine Indian community in its successful efforts to reclaim lands, gain tribal status, and revitalize cultural traditions. She has curated various museum exhibits based on her research, most recently Journeys West: The David & Peggy Rockefeller American Indian Art Collection for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. Currently she is working on a new book co-authored with Harald Prins (From Indian Island to Omaha Beach: The Story of Charles Shay, Penobscot Indian War Hero, 2010) and a series of museum exhibitions based on a two-volume study co-authored with Harald Prins for the National Park Service (Asticou’s Island Domain, 2007). McBride also serves as oral history advisor for the Kansas Humanities Council and as board member and vice president of the Women’s World Summit Foundation, based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. Dana Walrath is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Vermont and a Women’s Studies-affiliated faculty member. She earned her PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and is a medical and biological anthropologist with principal interests in biocultural aspects of reproduction, the cultural context founded and directed an innovative educational program at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine that brings anthropological theory and practice to first-year medical students. Before joining the faculty at the University of Vermont in 2000, she taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Templeton Foundation. Dr. Walrath’s publications have appeared in Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, and American Journal of Physical Anthropology. An active member of the Council on the Anthropology of Reproduction, she has also served on a national committee to develop women’s health-care learning objectives for medical education and works locally to improve health care for refugees and immigrants.

Good book, helped me with my class

I found this book to be very well organized and that helped me study for my tests and find the right sections when I did my assignments. I thought the book was pretty interesting and I didn't get too bored when I was doing my reading assignments.

I had this same book in the Loose leaf form that has no binding but has 3 holes to put in a binder. It was the 13th edition and the same exact book as this but cheaper, here it is: Cultural Anthropology: The Human Challenge

Overall I thought this book was pretty good for my class and it helped me get an A.

Sentimental Journey

David Doyle's new Squadron at Sea series starts off with a bang with his first volume covering the USS Arizona. The style is a bit different from other books in that the story is told by a series of photographs with detailed, but generally concise explanations. Topics will tend to start with the building of the ship, its service life, modifications, notable events including combat damage or known occasions. With a different twist, the author wishes to end his work with the vessel's final disposition be it scrapped, sunk or turned into a museum which in the USS Arizon's case, all three occurred.

It's easy to get lost in all the video game violence or monday morning quarterbacking of historical analysis. Mr Doyle uses the unsual photograph assisted medium to relate a haunting, personal and deeply touching recount of the way things really were. He is well prepared, knowledgeable not only about the history, but of the human condition. The pictures are brimming with details, and the captions will often cue in the reader into details that may be difficult to see, not readily apparent, to eye candy or just to the background and spirit of the shots. Above all, the book comes across as very respectful of the ship and people on board, particularly the ones that perished before their time.

For all Historic Naval Ship buffs, this unusual book is a must read. This book would also be highly appealing to modelers. Of note, the photos are from many, many different sources some of which are easier to contact than others. The cost of obtaining all the photos from all the different sources yourself would be far, far higher and you'd still be without Mr. Doyle's wonderful captions that breathe life into them. The diversity of photographs and their significance showing ship updates pertinent to changing technology, cultural and geographhic references of the time period would also appeal to anthropologists or historians wishing to deepen their knowledge of the early 20th century. In short, this book is a real treat for anyone peripherally interested in the topic and I am happy I got to read it.

Note: I was given this book for free to write a review. Nonetheless, if you've clicked this far, you will probably enjoy the book. I highly recommend it; go ahead and buy it, you won't be sorry.

Its crazy how someone you don't know at all could have/went through the same things that you did. Reyna seems to be an amazing beautiful person inside and out. I've been following her for a while now, on every social media and she is an amazing human being, inside and out. Chris Dickinson

Chris Dickinson grew up in England with a strong passion for science, mathematics, and video games. He received his master's degree in physics with electronics from the University of Leeds in 2005, and immediately traveled to California to work on scientific research in the heart of Silicon Valley. Finding that career path unsuitable, he began working in the software industry. Over the last decade, he has made a career in software development, becoming a senior software developer. Chris has primarily worked in software automation and internal test tool development, but his passion for video games never fully faded. In 2010, he took the path of discovering the secrets of game development and 3D graphics by completing a second degree―a bachelor's degree in game and simulation programming. He authored a tutorial book on game physics (Learning Game Physics with Bullet Physics and OpenGL by Packt Publishing). He continues to work in software development, creating independent game projects in his spare time with tools such as Unity 3D.

I have been working with Unity for many years and a common problem we always have sooner or later is optimization. There are many tutorials, posts and articles out there with valuable information on how to optimize your Unity app, but they are not complete and difficult to collect.

Chris in this Unity 5 Game Optimization has done a fantastic job putting into one book all the best techniques and suggestions to make your Unity game a success, considering all the different aspects your game can be optimized.

Excellent book on optimization.

* Covers all areas of optimization. Scripting, Batching, Art and Sound assets, Physics, Graphics and memory management.
* Always careful to show how to test if optimizations worth doing.
* Highlights differences between mobile and desktop optimizations.
* Includes chapter on using the Profiler that is now free in Unity 5 Personal.

Cons:
* Some topics covered more than once although this is probably more noticeable as I read book cover to cover rather than just cherry picking chapters.
* A few sections quite wordy and felt they could be shorter.

Whilst I don't yet have a project ready to use most of the topics covered in this book I will definitely be coining back to it again when I do.

Very, very well written and thorough. The author is clearly a member of the Unity community, attends the conferences, reads the forums & Stack Overflow, and is a power user. I finished the book in two days and took copious notes. This book is intended for an intermediate Unity programmer who wants to learn about a multitude of optimization techniques. Instead of regurgitating the manual, the author does a great job of pulling together information from disparate sources and presenting it in an extremely clear and friendly manner. One of the best Unity books out there.
