This is a study of the British state's generation, suppression and manipulation of news to further foreign policy goals during the early Cold War. Bribing editors, blackballing "unreliable" journalists, creating instant media experts through provision of carefully edited "inside information", and exploiting the global media system to plant propaganda--disguised as news--around the world: these were all methods used by the British to try to convince the international public of Soviet deceit and criminality and thus gain support for anti-Soviet policies at home and abroad.

Britain's shaky international position heightened the importance of propaganda. The Soviets and Americans were investing heavily in propaganda to win the "hearts and minds" of the world and substitute for increasingly unthinkable nuclear war. The British exploited and enhanced their media power and propaganda expertise to keep up with the superpowers and preserve their own global influence at a time when British economic, political and military power was sharply declining. This activity directly influenced domestic media relations, as officials used British media to launder foreign-bound propaganda and to create the desired images of British "public opinion" for foreign audiences.

By the early 1950s censorship waned but covert propaganda had become addictive. The endless tension of the Cold War normalized what had previously been abnormal state involvement in the media, and led it to use similar tools against Egyptian nationalists, Irish republicans and British leftists. Much more recently, official manipulation of news about Iraq indicates that a behind-the-scenes examination of state propaganda's earlier days is highly relevant.

John Jenks draws heavily on recently declassified archival material for this book, especially files of the Foreign Office's anti-Communist Information Research Department (IRD) propaganda agency, and the papers of key media organisations, journalists, politicians and officials. Readers will therefore gain a greater understanding of the depth of the state's power with the media at a time when concerns about propaganda and media manipulation are once again at the fore.

This book does NOT have positive princess messaging

Warning to mothers who care about message: Avoid this wolf-in-sheep's clothing.

If you love princesses, and are just looking for something a little different, then it's cute enough. But if you are like me, and you don't love princesses, yet have a princessy daughter whose spirit you don't want to crush by forbidding all things pink and glittery so are trying to find her some alternative princesses.... you will gack.

I had high hopes that this book would undermine the female stereotypes that go along with princesses---the pink, the love of shoes and shopping, the dream of big castle, big ring and Mr. Right, the passivity, the emphasis on wealth and consumerism. But it emphasizes those things at least as much as our ordinary princess programming, if not a little more. Programming like Disney's "Brave" and even "Sofia the First" are more levelheaded and less ickily gendered than this book.

The first story, "The Clumsy Princess" by Lou Kuenzler is the most maddening, as it falls into the Hollywood cliche of making a girl likeable because she's a klutz. This is the first time this annoying stereotype has entered our home, and my daughter thinks it's just hilarious that the girl is bumping and tripping and falling all over herself. The basic plot is that the klutzy princess is supposed to present a handkerchief to the knight who wins a tournament, but she doesn't want to, and instead falls into a suit of armor and ends up winning herself. This is insidious. The message is that princesses don't compete; they wins without trying, by accident, despite themselves. It's a terrible thing to teach little girls, who already are steered away from confident achievement and sports. Of course the book is marketed as being pro-sports.

Story number two is about a princess who wants a bigger castle and fancier clothes, but when she switches places with a cousin who has those things, discovers that it's boring to be dressed up all the time and that she prefers home. It's ok, but it still feels like a story essentially about wanting a big castle and fancy clothes.

Number three, "The Princess and the P.E.," like the first, is about a princess who sucks at sports. My daughter has already osmosed that "sports aren't for girls," not, I fear, to her long-term benefit. At the princess school, girls play boys, and this princess is so inept, she singlehandedly sinks her side, and the boy teams always win. ('Cause boys are just naturally good at sports, right?) Until, that is, a magic frog (prince in disguise) teaches her to try harder by imagining something she really wants---SHOES! (Eeek! Shoegasm!!) She does, and becomes a star. (All it takes is the right shoes, ladies! Buy some more.) The frog turns into a prince but she doesn't want to "walk away into the sunset" with him because he's sweaty, slimy and wearing gym clothes. Some messaging in here is ok--trying harder, not choosing the prince if you don't like him--but again there's the taint that princesses don't do sports, and don't like things like sweat and gym clothes.

And story three and several others play with the culmination of marriage, which, though a lovely thing in some cases, isn't something I want to program my girl to believe is the end-of-story. Number four and six are both also marriage plots, one with a passive princess and no redeeming qualities (it even slags on poets, with vaguely anti-intellectual aplomb), and another where the princess supposedly subverts the tradition by setting out to find her own prince, ending with an illustration of a woman in a room jammed to the rafters with suitors.

I'm omitting to mention one very cute story, "Double Dragons" by Enid Richemont, that's in fact just what I'd want, about a princess who goes out and defeats a dragon. Unfortunately it's way too little considering the rest of the book.

And I also should mention--ultimate poison chalice--that my daughter adores the book, and wants to read it multiple times a day.

Finally, a princess book with intelligent and strong princesses a girl can actually look up to.

Though the Disney princesses are popular, they all send young girls a similar message. You must be beautiful and passive in order to get Prince Charming. This book presents tales with intelligent, strong princesses that are far from passive. They give girls like my daughter a different message. You can be beautiful AND strong, and sometimes even save Prince Charming instead of waiting to be saved. Princesses can be independent and still attract a handsome suitor.

Fun for kids and adults

The stories in this collection have the charm of fairy tales with a large dose of humor and a good bit more accessibility for kids. Girls today may want to read about princesses, as they have for ages... but it is fun to see the princess protagonists in a contemporary context with modern morals. In addition, the creative use of typesetting and large, vivid pictures make the book a unique visual treat.

An Essential Book

I am a serious, pro-amature who's been away from photography for quite a few years. When I treated myself to a Nikon N80 for my birthday this year, I knew that black and white photography was where I wanted to focus. Black and White Shots is an invaluable source for me for staging as well as lighting for black and white photography. I was able to look at pictures that caught my eye and read both description and a diagram of how the photographer put the shot together. Film type, f/stops, lighting types, positioning and notes about the shoot -- this book had it ALL!!! It told me the basics and allowed me to add my own creative touch to a photo session. Definitely a reference KEEPER!

As with all of the Pro Lighting series of books, this latest edition adds insightful tips and tricks into the world of "pro" level B/W photography. Especially helpful are the detailed shot elements that allow you to very closely achieve results like those you see in print.

About the Author

Lynne Porter is Resident Designer and Director of the Theatre Program at Fairfield University, where she has been teaching, administrating, and making theatre since 1995.She is also the Academic Director of Creative Life Residential College, a sophomore experience focused on inspiring the creative impulse. She regularly designs for the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, where she is an Affiliated Artist of the Ensemble. She also designs with the Guerrilla Shakespeare Project in New York and various theatres from Maine to Georgia. Lynne is an associate member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America and a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, as well as the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. She holds an MFA in scenic design from Indiana University.

A fine introduction to both Tolkien & classic fantasy

This was one of the first books to delve into Tolkien's now-classic tale, and in many ways, it's still one of the best. By exploring the roots of both Tolkien's work & the fantasy genre overall, Carter provides much-needed perspective ... to say nothing of having introduced an entire generation of fantasy readers & future fantasy writers to the masters of the field. I still recall the excitement of learning about Lord Dunsany & Wiliiam Morris for the first time, and my appetite for their work was whetted by the brief samples Carter so tantalizingly provided to his readers!
The entire Ballantine Adult Fantasy series so wonderfully developed & edited by Carter can be seen as an outgrowth of this seminal work; for that reason alone, it's deserving of praise. But it's also enjoyable & informative reading on its own merits. Carter wrote at the height of the intial Tolkien craze & much of that exhilaration & delight is reflected here. His prose is deceptively easy-going & always accessible: he's clearly writing about a living man & his living work, not the ponderous monument so many writers have since made of him. Yes, there are more detailed (and more accurate) books about Tolkien, but this one truly conveys the pleasures of masterful & classic fantasy. Recommended!

Read it and you'll know why fantasy is now awful

Lin Carter's book is a tour through the literary world of Europe in the last thousand years touching on Norse Epics, warrior tales and the Spanish adventure series parodied by Don Quixote. It's amazing in it breadth even if its depth is shallow. As she goes over the literature that influenced Tolkein in his epic you will understand why you can't read The Lord of the Rings just once and why there's so much going on (even in those boring appendices of Tolkein). You will also understand why you haven't read a fantasy book for years.
Tolkein was a genius. But everyone else imitates Tolkein these days. There are some exceptions - Tanith Lee, Stephen King, Barry Hughart but the Terry Brooks and Robert Jordans of the world set their books in that pseudo medeival tripe you know there's something missing. This book explains why. Tolkein had decades of research and pure love behind him. The other fantasy writers can only imitate Tolkein.
Buy this book when it comes out new and give it as a gift to all your friends. You'll be happy you did. And then go through it for reading suggestions - as it provides the most invaluable reading list since Stephen King's Danse Macabre chapter.

This book is a fascinating inquiry into the process of making of the greatest fantasy epic of our time. Along with the analyses of Middle Earth's different trends you will find a wealth of fantasy lore about other authors of the time and their works. This is an enchanting book that will make you see fantasy in a completely different light.

This book is a brief survey of Western historical thinking from ancient times to the present and also an introduction to some of the main issues and problems in historiography, philosophy of history, and historical method. It seeks to strike a balanced coverage and to make such concerns accessible to beginning students. Novice historians need to encounter questions of theory in order to grasp the nature of the discipline, but many probably lack the prerequisites to take on R. G. Collingwood straight. This small work may ease the transition.

I want to express my thanks to former colleagues who shared some of these interests, notably George M. Dennison of the University of Montana and Harry Rosenberg, Manfred J. Enssle, Thomas J. Knight, and James E. Hansen III of Colorado State University. D. Great overview

This short book does a good job of providing an overview of Western historical thinking from Herodotus and Thucydides to the modern period. The first chapter is a brief discussion of why we study history to begin with: curiosity, a need to bring order to the world, identify cause and effect, study the identity of a people, calculate the consequences of our actions, and to provide society's memory.

Chapters two and three review the evolution of historical writings and their approach. Gilderhus begins with the ancient historians with a discussion of history in Greece and Rome and then reviews the influence of Christian thought; a paradigm against which history revealed the workings of God's plan. This perspective began to disappear as Western Christianity divided and historians of various religious persuasions wrote histories supporting their perspectives of the past. Enlightenment historians went on to reject a religious approach or even a factual approach wishing to rely on reason for their proofs while at the same time denigrating the past. This gave way to the influence of romanticism and nationalism in the 19th century which led to a more scientific approach to research and analysis. (p. 36) (In some ways this was a reaction to the emphasis on religion and God on man but it could also be a reaction to the renaissance emphasis on the greatness of classical civilizations.)

Chapter 4 then reviews the philosophical aspects (speculative approaches) of history; Gilderhus says there are three schema: cyclical, providential, and progressive (p. 49) and discusses each in turn. Chapter 5 reviews the analytical philosophical approaches to history reflected in the positivist approach (general laws exist that govern the outcomes of human affairs, and idealist thought (which believed that because history was about man, who had free will, history was not repeatable). Chapter six is a simple overview of types of historical papers and research. The last chapter summarizes the state of historiography as it has evolved in the last century.

Entire books have been written about each of the areas addressed in Gilderhus' book; the strength of this book is that it provides a simple easy-to-read overview of the whole field and the thinking behind history.

Good Introduction in Historiography

I have to preface this with the caveat that my graduate-level historiography class was taught by Dr. Gilderhus, though that was several years ago. Then again, he didn't see the need to use this text at that level of study. Where I first read it was in my undergraduate historiography class. The text isn't earth-shattering nor meant as such. As an undergraduate though, I found the text highly informative on the basics of the history of history, its theory and various methodologies. Dr. Gilderhus has come up with perhaps the most elegant, but not simplistic, definition of what history is that I have yet to read. For Dr. Gilderhus, history is "the true story of the human past." It's a definition that works well for the non-history types but still offers something for more advanced readers to unpack. And that's the beauty of this text. It's not meant as a complex treatise on historiography but as an initial pass at the major figures, modes of thought and methodological developments that have brought Western historical thought to where it stands today. For a beginning student or avid amateur you'll find the text an accessible entry-point into historiography. While there are many other texts, such as E.H. Carr's "What Is History?" that provide a deeply nuanced examination of the field, having the basics already laid out allows one to focus on those nuances without needing to look up a name every other page.
I would recommend this text to anyone, even advanced-level history students, who want to quickly grasp the basics of historiography. As any good primer text does, "History & Historians" invites the reader to delve deeper into the topic but still stands on its own strengths. I gave the text only a three-star rating because, as I said, it isn't a masterful and innovative text. Instead, the text is a solid, cursory overview of the field. Complaints about its lack of depth miss the point. If you want complex theory then move on to Hayden White or Lynn Hunt. But as an introductory text it does the job and does it well.
