A touchstone

This book was an epiphany when I encountered it years ago (glad it's still in print so I can give a copy here and there to special people). Dunno how much Confucius there is behind Pound's translation, but what he writes here is haiku about purpose, vision, honor, decency and integrity.
Oh yes, Pound was a lunatic on more than a few counts (most notably, his affiliation with Fascism and and Nazism), but he's still one of the finest English authors of the 20th century.
I originally pinned the following quote from this book on Nixon...though it's just as applicable to the current crop of amoral politicians and CEOs:
"When the head of state of family thinks first of gouging out an income, he must perforce do it through small men; and even if they are clever at their job, if one employ such inferior characters in state and family business the tilled fields will go rack swamp and ruin and edged calamities will mount up to the full.... This is the meaning of: A state does not profit by profits"

Confucius say

This book was my first introduction to Confucius and I was very pleased. Other reviewers have made critical reference to the translation. While not a Chinese scholar, I am aquainted with the literature and this volume has been the most useful in introducing me to Confucius.

Ezra Pound seems to have captured the essense of these writings, as this translation confirms many ideas contained in other more scholarly works. Highly recommended!

Not a good place to start studying Confucianism

I bought this book because I had heard some people say it was more poetic than other translations. I did not find this to be true. If you are a beginner in Confucianism, "The Unwobbling Pivot" is usually referred to as the "Doctrine of the Mean." "The Great Digest" is usually referred to as "The Great Learning". I read Pound's translation of the Analects and I was disappointed. I think Waley's translation is closer to being poetic than Pound's translation. I have studied many translations of the Analects and I found Pound's translation to seem off-mark. The language was usually clumsy rather than poetic. I eventually put it aside.

I do applaud Ezra Pound's love of Confucianism and his intention to promote Confucianism for Westerners. In this vein, I recommend "Achieve Lasting Happiness" by Robert Canright, which is a version of the Analects updated for modernity. Canright's book also presents a vision of how Americans can embrace Confucianism as a system of universal ethics.

One of the other reviews said "no one knows how much Chinese Ezra Pound knew". I recommend "Ezra Pound and Confucianism" by Feng Lan. The author discusses Pound's translation in a way that is accessible and interesting. Dr. Feng Lan goes beyond the issues of translation. He also discusses Ezra Pound's "political polemic" in chap. 3 and Pound's spiritual beliefs in chapter 4.

Whether or not you buy this book by Pound, I encourage you to buy Robert Canright's book and Feng Lan's book.

"I trusted this author at once because, unlike the psychobabblers, he says from the start that there are no "laws" of attraction and no foolproof methods for getting someone to date you, let alone jump into bed with you. That isn’t to say there is nothing to be gained from studying the processes involved in what draws us together. It’s just a lot trickier than most self-help books would suggest. But with precision and no small wit – I found myself frequently laughing out loud - he explores the four key factors that shape the formation of most relationships: proximity, appearance, reciprocity and similarity. As he shows, studying attraction or relationships scientifically, far from destroying the magic and mystery of it all, can actually be helpful, whether you aspire to be lover or friend. Viren Swami is Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK. He is an international expert on attraction and body image, and has written and edited several books on these topics. i would be much more eager to pay nearly $30 for a book if it was accessible on kindle unlimited to read first because samples don't truly provide enough information to convince me to make that much of an investment. if i am able to conclude the author has given me a solid product it gives me incentive to consider paying that much to return my appreciation. i suggest you do that or dramatically lower your price because there are many great books on many subjects that only ask for a few dollars and when customers with budgets must decide between one book with a high price or being able to afford for the same price several perfectly informative books only charging a few dollars... quantity is going to win. so please persuade me and others to feel that we are better off purchasing your book because yours seems to be a very promising resource but i'm not so desperate for this knowledge to justify being unwise with my money either.

A Visionary in Many Arenas

This is the book that made me appreciate Mr Ford's accomplishments and how he changed the world of business, particularly manufacturing. He was a leader and true visionary in many aspects of business, which are chronicled herein, and many of the roots of Lean are documented in this text. Aside from kanban and `jelly beans', he didn't miss much of the fundamentals of what we see as Lean.

The impacts of Ford's principles on business, the economy, social ramifications, and more are profound. The ideas, thought processes, and applications are expressed well and we can learn from these today. Too bad much of the rest of American business lost sight of Ford's techniques as they became enamored with scientific formulae like EOQ (economic order quantities) without questioning the assumptions.

Book is great for anyone who is interested in Project Management or just manufacturing and life lessons in all. This book teaches one so many different things that it's hard to say where to classify it under. Put it under the must read section. Jdv.

An historical document of our contemporary

There are different "uses" for this book - some I'd recommend, and others not.

I WOULD NOT recommend this book for it's insights on -

Economics: Ford explains a classic industrial notion that a company paying employees more will increase its sales because employees will buy more company product. Not only is this a false assumption of employee behavior, it also only approaches plausibility for very large consumer product companies.

Finance: Ford describes how financial instruments are short-term narcotics and long-term ills. His opinion seems to ignore the buffering benefits of finance, as well as the gains created for society by letting financial tools open possibilities.

HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE -

It is current: Ford describes a organizational skill poorly understood and mostly ignored: coordination. In the book, many processes are described that Ford says are all well known to other companies, but how the Ford Corporation made the processes interact was their power. Today's out-sourcing is more palatable knowing this skill.

It is insightful: An excellent alternative to the "profit-motive" of companies is presented: service-motive. Not because profits are bad does Ford present the service-motive, but because profits are give unreliable feedback. Ford sees the maintenance of service to the public as a more durable goal.

It is historical: Not only does it provide the roots to Taiichi Ohno's - Toyota's - operations strategy, but it also gives clues to why Ford lost dominance. The Toyota roots pop up in Ford's writing on waste, on cleanliness (5s), on continuous flow, and on timing. The clues pop up with his ignorance of customer desires vs. needs, his overconfidence in managing highly diverse businesses, and his inattention to downstream processes.

If you know the limitations of Today and Tomorrow, you then can reap great benefits by reading it as if it was written last week. Many of its ideas have yet to fully play out in the world of industry.
