Pros & Cons

I want to be kind in my review, but at the same time I want to be completely honest about this book because I feel that others who read this review might benefit from it. I have alopecia totalis and universalis just like Molly. I was diagnosed with it three and a half years ago and one year later (two and a half years ago from now) I was completely bald from head to foot. I've been to all of the best clinics in my area, including the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (a research hospital) and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. However, doctors just don't know how to deal with alopecia patients apart from expensive, painful, and "not guaranteed to work" treatments. In the last year, I have found lots of information about how food and lifestyle can improve if not completely heal some of our common health issues in this day and age. Since I have a couple other autoimmune diseases in addition to alopecia, I've been reading up on it a lot. So this book intrigued me when I read that Molly healed her alopecia from a food-based regimen. I decided to buy the book and see where she was going with things and if I could learn anything new.

There are several positive things I liked about this book and there are several negative things I didn't like.

PROS:
1) One of the things I liked the MOST about this book was how honest and open Molly was about her condition. It was and will be a comfort to those of us who also deal with alopecia. It is a very emotional disease and Molly did a great job of painting that picture for even people without alopecia to understand.
2) The recipes sound fantastic! I'm really excited to try some of them!
3) I will recommend this book to other sufferers of alopecia who might contact me. We are few and far between and we truly do need to support each other. I'm sure this book will bring them comfort and help them begin the process of grieving what they have lost.

CONS:
1) I know that Molly is young and for her age, she has done a GREAT job of writing this book! I don't want to minimize that whatsoever. There were times that I felt the book was written quite juvenile, however...Kind of like a book report. I applaud her for being herself regardless...And I guess in reading this book, each person needs to understand that Molly was not an adult who lost her hair. She was a 12-year old girl. She dealt with this throughout her entire adolescence. So OF COURSE it's going to be a little juvenile. :)
2) It was laid out quite sporadically and disorganized. First, she tells her story. Then, she talks about chiropractic care, mental health, yoga, food, etc...But in the midst of all that, she's still telling bits and pieces of her story. I would have preferred to read it much like in the style of other biographies/self-help/dietary books. For example, tell us the background information of alopecia (which she did in a small way) using actual studies and reports from medical professionals. Then, tell us your story. Last, give us a detailed plan of how YOU overcame alopecia complete with food lists, charts, etc. I know this would require a lot more research on the author's part, but this is just a suggestion. :)
3) Some of the suggestions were questionable to me, but this could be a personal preference. For example, I have been reading a lot about the paleo diet and how helpful it can be to improve ALL of my personal health issues (including alopecia) as it helps to control inflammation which is the root cause of alopecia (not sure if that was mentioned in the book?). For this reason, I personally believe that grains, legumes, and dairy should be eliminated from the diet for a time and then reintroduced in order to find sensitivities. This, in the long run, will help a person control his or her inflammation more effectively. I would have liked to see Molly do a little more research into some of these things before writing a plan that could mislead people. I don't want that to sound harsh, but I think most people initially have this mindset that there's a "one-size-fits-all" solution and so they buy the book that lays out what worked for someone else and it ends up not working for them. What worked for Molly (which is what she was laying out in this book) may not work for someone else. It would have been nice if this book would have given more information that could have helped a larger majority of alopecia patients.

I wanted to enjoy this book and I did for the comforting factor. I think I was looking for more than I got from it, though, so it was a little disappointing to me. I just hope that this review helps others and might even be constructive to Molly herself, who I'm certain is a marvelous person. Again, I don't want to be a "Negative Nancy," but I do want to be helpful. :) And by the way, as of January of this year, I have little patches of hair growing on my scalp and eyebrows and eyelashes coming back in!

Molly my name is Stacy and I have been battling Aggressive Alopecia Areata for almost 10 years.

When all of my hair fell out 10 years ago, I went to a medical intuitive doctor. He was Russian and Chinese and he was hard to understand.
But he gave me his diagnosis. He said the AA was due to poor digestion. 10 years ago these concepts were not as readily available as they are
today. Well, don't you just know, I walked out of his office thinking he was a "quack" and went on with my unhealthy lifestyle.

About a year ago, a doctor of mine suggested i try a non inflammatory diet. "just for the heck of it". I was and had been completely bald for
a while, with no eyelashes and no eyebrows.

Within a year, I had a lot of little white hairs all over my head. I knew that something was happening. I became more and more healthy with
everything i did. Today, I have a full head of short hair!!!! My path was a little different in that once we had some hair growth, we used light
treatments and some steroid treatment as well. I had used the steroids in the past and had never had any success. I believe it was the healthy eating and lifestyle that did it!

As you said in the book, i would have KILLED for an incredible book like this when i was going through this disease.

I must also say that i was completely amazed at the level of your knowledge and maturity, understanding concepts that have taken me 48 years to understand.

Your parents must be so very proud of you. I wish you great success with this fine book that you have written.

I also wonder if it would be beneficial for the two of us to do some outreach to the Alopecia community and see if we can't help the rest of our community to get better.

My hair is growing back. I only started making just the smoothies from her books and already after having Alopecia for over 6 months with a huge bald spot on the side of my head which was clean there is now fuzz growing.

Molly is spot on with "purifying the body of toxins" because the immune system is overwhelmed. I believe my immune system has reacted from several factors: stress, allergies of various kinds, poor diet and lack of adequate sleep.

I believe my body will heal itself if I can eliminate these factors.

The Thirty Days Series by Bibi Paterson. they just keep getting better...

I just love the Thirty Days series and Ms Paterson adds a pinch more in Thirty Days Have April... Not only does the author continue the story from the previous books with her awesome characters and wonderfully detailed settings, NO this one has added tension and drama as well as that dash of romance and sexiness that made it a very hard book to put down...

well done Ms Paterson another fast paced and detailed story to feed my one-click addiction..

Looking forward to reading more.. now I just need to wait for Thirty Days June..

I would recommend this book to all readers (18+ due to mature content) if you like a steamy romance with added tension, Drama and unexpected twists then try The Thirty Days Series by Bibi Paterson. they just keep getting better...

Thirty days has September, April, June and November. Each book takes place in one of the 30 days months.

September starts the series with Abigail James meeting Taylor Hudson, the CEO of Hudson International where she works in London. They start dating. Abby's Nonna (grandmother) dies and leaves her a bread bakery in Brighton.

November finds Abby pregnant, expanding her business, getting engaged and Hannah attempting to murder her. Along with Taylor's twin brother terrorizing them.

April finds Abby and Taylor married. Hannah on trial for attempted murder. Richard terrorizing not only Abby and Taylor but also Taylor's younger sister Nicola.

Looking forward to June. June should see the birth of A by and Taylor's daughter. What else will happen in June?

Hot, steamy sex scenes. Recommend for anyone over the age of 18.

True generosity of spirit in these pages

This book far surpassed what I expected. Martin shows anybody fortunate enough to read this book that honor, courage and compassion exists in all living beings, we simply have yet to figure out how to communicate these traits with one another, human, dog, and as I am beginning to understand, all species. I read this book expecting to be entertained, and entertained I was! Having never traveled far I was thrilled to live in Martin and his pack of dog's world, even if only for the time I enjoyed his words. The Ireland he describes so vividly made me realize that his home, and mine are not all that different. People will bully, and the bullied will survive, grow, learn, love and become whole. This book will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you, Martin Mckenna for writing it, and living rough, and by doing so learning how to talk to dogs, and ultimately how to reach another human being with your story.

A scientific journey of discovery

Val Geist is world renown as the dean of behavioral ecologists (ethologists) of the hooved mammals (ungulates) of the northern hemisphere. Fritz Walther, an extraordinary ungulate ethologist in his own right, once described Geist as having a mind that combines the vastness of the Russian Steppe (Geist's natal homeland), with the meticulousness of Germany (where he spent his youth) and the audacity of North America (where he has spent his adulthood). Bull's eye.
I know of no wildlife biologist with greater depth of knowledge and creative insight, or greater courage and dedication in applying his knowledge to the challenge of real world conservation.
Coming full circle, Geist has finally writen an entire book devoted to the moose, an animal whose behavior he (like I) studied extensively during his youth.
We who have had the pleasure of reading his numerous other books and scientific papers know that each leads the reader on a rare and delightful intellectual journey of discovery. His insights are always fresh and vibrant, built on an extraordinarily wide knowledge of the literature combined with in depth firsthand knowledge. This book is no exception.
To any reader seriously interested in moose or just wildlife in general, this work is an extraordinary find.

Fascinating look at a fascinating creature

Since a child, moose have always amazed me. Turning to popular wildlife texts, however, I found that very few such books ever mentioned these magnificent deer. Finally a book has come along to fill this void.
Dr. Geist is a renown expert in cervid biology and conservation. His expertise regarding moose ecology in North America and Eurasia shines through every page of this book. He has the rare ability to combine personal experiences with potentially dry biology information to produce very readable prose. I truly enjoyed this text! The accompanying photos were also spectacular. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the moose.

Literacy for the 21st Century: A Balanced Approach (5th Edition)

This is a fantastic book. It is written well and has great applications for teaching literacy in the classroom. This is a book that I will keep for a resource in the years to come because of how valuable the information is as well as all of the additional resources provided within it. However, the website is not as helpful as I hoped. When I originally purchased the book from Amazon, the internet code was not included by the publisher to access the website. When I called the publisher to ask them about it, they were not helpful at all. Amazon did help me out so now I do have access. So, the book is great, the publisher was not helpful, and the website is not one that I have been impressed with to this point.

This person knows his craft, read the book, buy it if you can.

A seminal work on the greatest architect of the past two centuries, bar none. While I know that I sound partisan, or chauvinistic or whatever, I DON't CARE. Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the many gifts the USA have given to civilization and one of its shiniest. HR Hitchcock was (or is?) one of Wright's best critics. Highly recommended: essential for those who WANT to KNOW, as well as for those who do

The Essential Book for the Prairie Years

H R H 's book is the essential guide to Wright's formative years as he developed and modified his architectural idiom in Chicagoland and further a field. It represents a chronological overview of Wright's output in what has come to be known as the Prairie Style, when the Oak Park studio was gracing the world with innovative designs that still seem ahead of their time.

Hitchcock was an admirer of Wright and he brought out this book at a time when Wright's star was enjoying a second advent. Even so Wrights' 1940s-1950s resurgence is spottily represented in this volume; so, do not expect to find many of the later works.

But don't let that bother you. Take time to read and enjoy what is still the best guide to this portion of Wright's oeuvre.

One caveat. The book is in black and white, so you will want to find more recent volumes of color photographs to help expand your appreciation of Wright's aesthetic. He had an impeccable gift for tonality and this cannot be communicated in black and white.

GOOD REVIEW

I felt this was an interesting review of Wright's transition from Adler & Sullivan, the Prarie homes through the Usonian years. It is necessary to supplement this book with those which describe his life and philosphies in more detail to get the most out of "In The Nature of Materials." This is mostly a chronological review of how his home and commercial designs, concepts and use of materials matured over his working life. The second half of the book features photo examples of each step, and these are amply referred to by number in the text so you can easily refer to them. I enjoyed this book a great deal and recommend it for those who want more than just a Wright picture book.

Inspiring Ideas to Start Your Students' Day

Wow. There are some really fantastic ideas here to get all your students' day off in the right direction. One of my favorites is his brilliant idea to quickly and efficiently get an idea of how each and every individual student is feeling at the start of the day. What a simple, but effective, tool to build a foundation for figuring out what is going on with a student in a holistic way. And I absolutely love the idea about the quotes too. It seems like a great way to inspire children and get them thinking about the things that really matter. Overall, I was very impressed with how much can be accomplished in the first 10 minutes of a class if you're focused and organized about it. This is a great resource for any teacher!

Useful for all ages

As an educator-writer myself, I very much appreciate Steve Reifman's perspective and advice gleaned from years of teaching. His technique could also be useful for adult education instructors like me. First of all, it is a great approach for classes with cohorts where you have a longer term relationship. It requires a bit of commitment and training at the beginning of a class to get the students used to this method. But once students know what to expect, this 10 minute approach is a very efficient and effective set of "ice breakers." Though I would have to make some modifications, as a whole, Steve's First 10 Minutes approach sound like the kind of activities that my students would really appreciate. Although they are so results-driven, at the same time adults often crave this type of socio-emotional connection with peers even more than children, because adults are usually expected to care for their own emotional needs. The First 10 Minutes: A Classroom Morning Routine that Reaches and Teaches the Whole Child is a quick read, definitely worth the price, and would give any good instructor some ideas and a window into an effective classroom in action.

The ideas were ok but not really expanded(, though an excellent way to start class with quotes and thinking in terms ofcharacter traits) obviously another book,and the other links didn't respond,the cost was the same as the novel Atlantis gene... A400 page thriller...so disapointed.
