Stylish Architecture

This book could be concidered a fun reference book. It has many photos and illustrations for each style. I like the unsual dimentions of the book. Each style is shown in photos, diagram, and words. The examples chosen for each style are not necessarily the ones that are commonly used in textbooks. If you are a budding architecture fan, I believe you will enjoy this book.

The Field Guide That Could Have Been

This is the most dissapointing of architectural field guides because it had the potential to have been the very best. John Poppeliers was the head of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Allen Chambers was an historian with the Historic American Buildings Survey. Quite simply they had access to 51,000 sheets of measured drawings, 156,000 large format black and white photographs and over 20,000 reproductions of individual items. With all of that access, they could have produced the ultimate architectural field guide. Instead they produced a 146 page superficial guide.

The best aspect of this guide are the line drawings produced for the Historic American Building Survey. They are two dimensional drawings that are almost surgical in their precision. The building photographs are also first class.The narrative describing the different elements of the style is short and to the point.

The second edition of this book was published in 2003. In my opinion, if someone is going to introduce a new field guide into this already crowded arena, it has to offer something new. I would recommend sticking with the already proven field guides by Lester Walker, Rachel Carley, Carole Rifkind or Virginia McAllister.

This book is recommended for people with really short attention spans. This book is a dissapointment. Oh, what it could have been. One day, somebody from the HABS project will produce the ultimate architectural field guide.

A Sketchy Overview of American Architecture

This book is fine if you are looking only for a very brief look at American Architecture. It does not organize architectural styles to give a comprehensive overview of them. It does, however, present example photos of various styles with easy-to-read text briefly describing the styles. If you want a book that is handy and comprehensive, no other book can compare to A Field Guide to American Houses, by Virginia and Lee McAlester (ISBN 0-394-73969-8). This book will give you a comprehensive framework of the development of American Architecture so that you can build your understanding as you become exposed examples in the field. Everything from windows and doors to contruction techniques are covered. The book is organized in such a way that you can find what you need quickly. It is the cornerstone in the study of American Architecture.

Concise information, but errors abound

This is a book that you want to like because it is a nice concise country-by-country review of battleships and battlecruisers from approximately 1900 to the present. The book also includes a number of nice anecdotes in an attempt to bring the ships to life by connecting them to the men who fought them and the events that they were involved in. All this aside, however, there are some unconscionable errors. The author completely misses an entire series of British battlecruisers represented by the New Zealand, Australia and Indomitable. These were pivotal ships, yet to the author of this book it appears they never existed. There are also several notable omissions of ships that belonged to certain British and American battleship classes -- how do you lose or forget about a ship? And the author gives pretty short shrift to a series of very important American battleships from the late teens and early 1920's that shaped the Japanese response to America's naval strategic doctrine -- the author just sort of compresses these ships onto one page, which is a real pitty. There are other contradictions in terms of describing one ship being "well-armored" but another ship with equivalent specs not being well-armored (you really can't have this both ways). And while, nice at the end of the day the anecdotes are so short as to be a historical tease rather than a substantial benefit. The author has the right idea, but he needs to apply further research and perhaps convince his editor to give him about a hundred more pages to work with.

a missed opportunity for a good reference

Seapower competition is history of strategic gambles and capital ships were the instruments to achieve control of sealanes. This volume presents a review of the most important units and classes that were the mainstays of fleets. Unfortunately this work is not organic because the author provides only a limited description of design and costruction evolution of battleships and battlecruisers.
The review of ship characteristics falls short of expectations since it fails to produce a good assessment of seakeeping features and of operational capabilities. Limited facts are reported to explain technical improvements implemented during ship life span to match the neverending changes in strategies. Just few hints are shown to reveal topmost aspects and defects of each design with some information on consequential wartime limitations imposed during active service. Interspersed with descriptions of most important naval engagements and with summaries of most significant doctrines for naval warfare, this work gives only a superficial insight of opposing requirements that had been involved in planning, designing and building a battleship; in facts a short study for each class is presented without giving details of research and innovations in naval architecture that earmarked the field. A missing part is a wide overview of naval artillery. Since guns were among the leading specifications in launching a new class, it is odd that a better explanation of armament development is not covered.
Good points in this book are the nice color profiles, sometimes completed with plan and bow views. Unfortunately no scales are indicated, so being of limited use for modelers.

Pleasant, well-presented and very readable

This is my favourite reference book on battleships, just because it is so attractively balanced. Coloured diagrams of most classes mentioned, together with plentiful photographs, supplement very readable text descriptions. Before the end of the contents, the reader has been thrilled by photographs of Royal Sovereign, Resolution and Revenge (seen from the next ship ahead in line), the pre-dreadnought Agamemnon, and Malaya in company with Alabama and South Dakota off the coast of Norway.

The layout is a bit capricious, with some classes being relegated to brief mentions or telescoped into the sections on similar ships. Now and then, the author sees fit to pop in a "feature" - for instance the account of Heligoland Bight and the Falklands that appears opposite the text on the Invincible class battlecruisers. These are welcome, although they sometimes break up the logical progression of designs through the years.

I am not qualified to judge the book's accuracy, so I cannot dispute or confirm any statements made on this score. At least there were no errors gross enough to leap off the page at me.

Very comprehensive but a little to Euro/British centric.
I run an HR IT area, so I got this as a guide for me on the business side of the fence. It is VERY comprehensive, but dare I say a little too "common sense". I would have liked it to get into detail a bit more. If you are looking for a solid all around book about an HR organization however, this is a very good choice.

Even better than the first!

Continuing where Nightblade left off, World’s Edge follows Ryuu and Moriko as they continue on their paths learning the depths of the sense, each other, and the true centers of power in their world... This story was even better than the first. More action, more happening, and the whole world coming alive in ways that Nightblade scarcely alluded to.

Like other readers have noted the story moves along at a faster clip in this book and you’ll be hard pressed not to finish it in one sitting. I’m looking forward to seeing where the journey ends next year and what other new stories Mr. Kirk may have in store for us.

Easily holds its own against anything else out there in the fantasy genre right now.

“Worlds Edge” is the second book in Ryan Kirk’s “Nightblade” series – which I believe is a planned trilogy. Kirk’s first book was an impressive debut and this follow up is every bit as good as the first. Both books will easily hold their own against anything else out there in the fantasy genre right now. In this second episode, Ryuu and Moriko are attacked by a strange new type of warrior and they must embark on separate journeys to try and get answers. While this is happening, the three kingdoms stand on the brink of a civil war and a new massive army from outside of the kingdoms march toward them all.
Kirk continues to load up his story with new characters that are terribly interesting in their own right, all while further endearing Ryuu and Moriko to the reader. While this fantasy series might not be as epic in its scope as Sanderson’s “Stormlight Archive” or Weeks “Lightbringer” series, it is compelling in its own way. Perhaps it’s the beautifully simple magic system, or maybe it’s the impossible situations that the two main characters find themselves facing that makes them so relatable. Whatever it is, these first two books are captivating and very hard to put down. I’m excited to read the final book when it comes out and will certainly be purchasing whatever else Kirk releases in the future. This series is extremely good. Buy with confidence.

This book was absolutely heart wrenching

I started reading Worlds Edge with an anticipation that I haven't felt in a while. The first book was wonderful, and I had great expectations for its sequel, but I could never have imagined how it turned out. At every turn of a page I found myself more and more invested in the story, up until the end where I nearly burst in a mix of frustration and excitement. If you enjoyed the first book, you will not be dissapointed by the story that unfolds in this subsequent work.

This large-format collection of Ware's early work, mostly from 1990 and 1991, repackages material that appeared in Acme Novelty Library as well as other publications, but still feels amazingly fresh. Even in these early strips, Ware displays a virtuoso ability in both rendering and storytelling. The material consists of primarily one or two page strips focusing on Quimby's remarkable bad luck in life and everything else. Quimby resembles a distant cousin of Disney's iconic Mickey Mouse, but instead of being a chipper mascot, he's a tiny, bleak figure travelling across a hostile world. The depressing subject matter is clothed in the peppy antics of primal cartooning, making the strong emotions that much more potent for being so surprising. All of the work is packaged impeccably-Ware's beautiful gold foil stamped cover alone is worth the book's price, while his running joke that the book is, in fact, a discarded library book is funny and touching, underscoring comics' ephemeral quality. Ware also provides a wonderful autobiographical introduction that gives the work context without ever explaining it; he simply adds another layer. Fans of Ware's earlier Jimmy Corrigan will find much to enjoy here; the tragicomic sensibility, beautiful drawing and impeccable packaging that marked that book are all here in full effect.

Ware's Jimmy Corrigan (2000) was the most critically acclaimed graphic novel of the last decade. Although this collection of his work won't receive the accolades its predecessor reaped, in some ways it attests even more strongly his mastery of the comics medium. Here Ware toys with the very essence of comics. In some stories, he slices and dices the narrative quite extraordinarily, meticulously dividing a single page into as many as 168 individual, postage-stamp-size panels. Elsewhere, in a more straightforward but equally painstaking manner, he lovingly draws in the styles of vintage newspaper comic strips, reproducing even their yellowed-newsprint backgrounds. The eponymous Quimby's adventures, such as they are, are essentially pointless, but that is the point. The nondescript cartoon rodent goes through mundane activities, punctuated by the occasional dread-inducing experience, with an emotional resiliency equivalent to the physical elasticity of his animated forbears. He is the existentialist Wyle E. Coyote. Fortunately, the gorgeousness of this oversize volume matches Ware's fastidiousness. A word on brilliance

To appreciate C. Ware's work is simple: his genius is hard to miss. From the palate he uses to construct seasons to the grotesques of characters reminiscent of certain 19th century tracts, the man is a master of his craft.
Oddly enough I have found not one mention of the man's ability to panel well. The way he (literally) lays out his pictoral narrative is nothing short of amazing and nowhere is this seen more clearly than in Quimby Mouse. What essentially boil down to rotoscopic images more fit for a flip-book than a strip of celluloid transparencies, Ware's frames are set down in a fashion that is entertaining _to work through_. And rest assured, you will be working: often times a single page can and will take you a good 20 minutes to read thouroughly. This is material not for the casual reader of comics, but for the artisan or art critic who needs stimulation that runs beyond the visceral.

Early work by Ware. Magnificent book design.

"Quimby" offers many pleasures, though this is not as substantial as "Jimmy Corrigan" is (or as "Rusty Brown" promises to become). Much of the work in this volume was done by Ware as an undergraduate(!) at U of Texas. It's probably not the best intro to Ware (that would be Jimmy Corrigan, or a recent issue of Acme Novelty Library), but it is a very welcome volume for those already hooked on his brilliant comics and witty sidebars. Much of this material was published in early Acme Novelty issues, but there's enough new and redisigned material here to justify Ware fans buying this one, even if you (like me) have the earlier editions already.

Heartbreakingly funny and touching

This book showcases works mainly published in the author's college newspaper, and as he points out with humor and apologies in tiny print, are mainly a request of his publisher after the success of "Jimmy Corrigan". The scenes in his comics are each different, each experimental in a way. And if you take the time (and I highly suggest you do) to read all the fine print scattered throughout the book, you will find that he drops the shield of humor and sarcasm in parts, to tell an autobiographical account of his life at the time he was creating the "Quimby" strips. After reading this, it is apparent that all of them carry a deep personal meaning for the author, and even without that knowledge - they would be fantastic. With it though, they are heartbreaking, thoughtful, and amusing - more often all three at the same time. Chris Ware has an amazing gift.
