Well Written!

This is an excellent guide for teaching students the basic structure of the language. The acquisition is perfect for students in college. Specifically, the presentation is geared toward developing writing skills to critique high quality literature in the English Composition and Literature courses, as well as writing across the curriculum.

Excellent book

I taught the upper-level developmental writing courses, and this is one of my favorite books. The instruction is lively, clear, and concise--yet jam packed with information. So many students struggle with writing introductions, conclusions, and thesis statements. Unlike most books that jam all three topics into one chapter, this book breaks it down into three separate chapters with very clear, interesting examples and exercises to help you develop the skills and the craft of writing.

I often advised my students to hold on to this book when they leave my class and move on to Comp 1 and 2; the lessons here will them through to the more advanced courses. When I tutored comp 1 students in the lab, I'd introduce them to this book and told them, "If you don't understand a concept in your current book, turn to the appropriate topic in this book and work on those exercises.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I didn't like the grammar section all that much.

About the Author

Stephen Brooks is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Windsor, where he teaches in the areas of Canadian politics, public administration, and American politics. His research interests include the political influence of intellectuals, political thought in Canada and the United States, federalism, and public policy. He has been visiting professor at several institutions, including the University of Michigan and recently spent seven months teaching Canadian politics in Paris. Not a good dummies book

A 'dummies' book is supposed to be written for a person that has no knowledge of the subject. This book is a poor example of that. It assumes, for instance, that you already have a correct installation of SQL server. It does not go into the installation process at all. Many of the 'features' are specifically mentioned followed by a sentence that 'I don't cover XX in this book. For people who are going to look through the table of contents, this is totally misleading.. These are a few items that are 'shown' in the table of contents that this book specifically does NOT cover. Installation, the Profiler, T-SQL, online indexing, Online Page and File Restore, Database Engine Tuning Advisor, Full Text Search, SQLCMD.. Many other features are just briefly described.. To look at the table of contents you would think this book covered it all. I give it a DON'T BUY based on it deceptive practices alone.

It's OK

It's OK is the name of a Beach Boys's song from 1976 and in computer terms, a 9 year old piece of software might as well be 35 years old like the song. I just got it because it was cheap and I wanted to learn about stored procedures. It is still on my shelf as a reference book.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This book is not focused and not targeted to an audience. Most of the features are not covered with enough depth and background to make the information useful. The chapter on replication, which is an advanced feature, was pretty good, but the chapters on backup and recovery where poorly explained.

About the Author
Brian Smithers is a classically-trained musician, conductor, and composer who has been performing and teaching music for more than twenty years. He has served as conductor of the world-famous Walt Disney World Band and has contributed articles to Keyboard Magazine, Music & Computers, and Electronic Musician. An accomplished recording engineer, he founded a Web site that was for years the only sustained Internet resource for laptop-based music production. Learn mixing in a stepwise, methodical way

This book is very useful and is 90% hands-on with the CD included having Pro Tools sessions for all examples.
All examples are easily accessed, being set up with Pro Tools markers. It is worth the money!

Highly Recommended

I've been a post-production sound engineer for more than twenty years, and I am also a trainer. As the latter, I find the exercises to be a very effective way to teach the art of mixing. They move at an excellent pace, and give the beginner a fantastic opportunity to learn about EQ, dynamics, time-based effects and various special effects, and how they are used within a mix. There is also a chapter on advanced dynamics for the intermediate user, some very useful chapters on automation and stereo enhancement, and some great tips on how to achieve an interesting and dynamic mix. All in all, an excellent, hands-on training manual, which is especially useful for the kinesthetic, rather than theoretical, learner.
