Start when children are young these are the special years

I was late reviewing this item. I purchased it back when I needed to build up my book base for my Social Work degree. Many of the issues children have start in the early years of their developmental. Excellent Resource for Writers

If you've ever visited Bryn's website, you might already be familiar with some of her lists for writers. I love lists in general (proud Type-A), but she does more than just jot down quick lists. The lists in this book are detailed and categorized to create a fantastic reference book for writers. Sure, you could grab a thesaurus to try and find a better verb and spend hours flipping through it because none of them quite fit, or you could go right to this book and search by the emotion or action your character needs to convey.

In addition to word lists, the book has an extensive section on names - first AND last that includes their origins. No need to google the latest list of baby names when you can just open this book and find the perfect character names to fit into the time period of your book.

One of my favorite parts about the book are the plot lists. There are pages and pages of suggestions for action plots, romance plots, family plots, workplace plots. Every writer knows the only way to get better at writing is to write as often as possible. Grab this book, flip it open to one of the plot lists and use it for prompts. Or use the word lists as a jumping off point.

Another great thing about this book is reading the lists made me think of things I could add to them. If you ever feel like you're stuck, just read through one of the sections and it'll get your mind spinning with possibilities. I recommend this book for all writers. Being a writer I was very excited when I found out about this book. Often, your brain needs a little help with expressing certain ideas or feelings. The book didn't disappoint. Extremely thorough and in the whole well organized. I have already used it while writing and I am certain it will hold a special place in my writing toolbox.

No more wracking your brain for the right turn of phrase -- Bryn has sorted and compiled everything from descriptive phrases, to plot summaries, to character traits and names... Writer's block? Just run your eye down one of Bryn's lists to discover a new jumping off point.

Of course, no book is going to do the work for you -- a writer has to write. But this resource is wonderful for helping the writer easily sift through word choices, compare connotations, or find new direction. Many thanks, Bryn, for putting these lists together! I know they will be consulted over and over.

Leckey's The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families.

The term Tenmile Country refers to an area of land in Greene and Washington counties in southwestern Pennsylvania that is traversed by Tenmile Creek. During the early colonial period, this region of the Upper Monongahela, like that of Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) slightly to the north and what would become Morgantown, West Virginia to the south, was inhabited by the indigenous peoples; by French missionaries, trappers, and traders; and eventually by a number of intrepid British "trans-Allegheny pioneers." After 1750, however, the Tenmile Country--like the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia-- became a desired place of settlement or stopover point for the huge migration of Scotch-Irish, German, and to a lesser extent, British, colonists who extended American settlement beyond the Alleghenies. Migration to the Monongahela took place over three main routes: along the National Pike via Winchester, Virginia; through the Shenandoah Valley to the head of the Cheat River and from there to the Monongahela; and along the Lincoln Highway to Ligonier, Pennsylvania and thence along Jacob's Creek to the Monongahela. From the time of the French and Indian War to the end of the 18th century, the tributaries of the Tenmile Creek would be inundated by pioneers--many of them German or Scotch Irish, some of them the spillovers from the great migration into Kentucky, and still other travellers and immigrants who passed through Baltimore en route to one of the great migration trails.

The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families was originally published as a series of newspaper articles by Mr. Leckey before being consolidated as a book in 1950 and then reprinted with an every-name index under the auspices of the Greene County Historical Society in 1977. The work commences with an historical overview of settlement in the Tenmile Country, and it concludes with the aforementioned index of some 30,000 entries. In between, the genealogist of southwestern Pennsylvania can savor 500 or more family histories, of varying lengths, which delineate the lineages of the many families who migrated into this area. The genealogies, which are arranged according to place of settlement, are periodically embellished with rosters of one sort or another, maps, facsimiles, and illustrations. Overall, the genealogical sketches cover or touch on more than 2,000 main families who settled in the Upper Monongahela during the final third of the eighteenth or first quarter of the nineteenth century. Without a doubt this is the starting point for genealogical research in southwestern Pennsylvania, and Clearfield Company is delighted to make it available again.

"A traveler from an antique land... lives within us all," claims Sykes, a professor of genetics at Oxford. This unique traveler is mitochondrial DNA, and, as this provocative account illustrates, it can help scientists and archeologists piece together the history of the human race. Mitochondrial DNA is present in every cell in the body, and it remains virtually unchanged (aside from random mutations) as it passes from mother to daughter. By quantifying and analyzing the mutations of this relatively stable circle of DNA, Sykes has solved some of the hottest debates about human origins. For example, he clarified a long-running debate among anthropologists over the original inhabitants of the Cook Islands. After retrieving mitochondrial DNA samples from the island natives, Sykes concluded that the natives emigrated from Asia, not America, as many Western anthropologists had contended. In a similar manner, Sykes analyzed samples from native Europeans to determine that modern humans are not at all related to Neanderthals. The book's most complex and controversial find that the ancient European hunter-gatherers predominated over the farmers and not vice versa leads Sykes to another stunning conclusion: by chance, nearly all modern Europeans are descendants of one of seven "clan mothers" who lived at different times during the Ice Age. Top-notch scientific survey, with bizarre fictional chapters

The first 200 pages of this book exemplify the best of scientific journalism: the author describes a difficult subject matter clearly and succinctly for those who don`t know much about genetics, he presents each scientific investigation as if it were a detective story, and he conveys his excitement and enthusiasm for his work. Anyone who reads this book will come away with enough knowledge about mitochondrial DNA and prehistoric humans to understand today's headlines. Sykes explains how DNA testing identified the bodies of the Romanovs (laying to rest fanciful stories about how they survived the Russian Revolution), he rebuts Thor Heyerdahl's theories of migration, and he presents a convincing case that all humans of European ancestry are descended from seven women. (He also discusses the possible ancestries of non-Europeans, for which--so far--there is far less evidence.)
Given how compelling and fun the majority of the book is, nothing prepares the reader for what comes next: seven chapters containing fanciful and completely fictional reconstructions of each of the "daughters of Eve." Sykes admits he cannot even be sure of where or when each of these women may have lived, but he reconstructs little soap operas out of the nonexistent facts of their lives; these New Age-inspired outtakes from "Clan of the Cave Bear" do not succeed even as good fiction. "Xenia was born in the wind and snow of late spring." "This year Helena's father was going to try a spear-thrower and detachable point for the first time." "Velda had a strong artistic streak." "Tara had always been a fast runner and her father, fit though he was, was gaining on her slowly." (Tara even "invents" a boat.) He fabricates entire families and children, births and deaths, relationships and tragedies for each of these women, even though he knows for certain only that they each had two daughters. For the most part, I found these chapters embarrassing and unreadable.
If Sykes wanted to speculate for the reader where, when, and how each of these women lived, he certainly could have done so in a scientific framework and made it interesting. For example, he could have presented what we know from the archaeological record about their approximate eras and possible environs. (I would in particular like to know what evidence, if any, scientists have uncovered to imagine that prehistoric societies featured mostly monogamous relationships, which figure prominently in Sykes`s stories.)
Fortunately, Sykes turns his attention back to the science in the last two chapters. Overall, except for the fictional chapters, this is a first-rate survey. I do wish, however, that the author had added a bibliographical essay or general notes, both to support his arguments and to suggest where readers might turn, now that he's managed to enlighten us on the subject.

An easy to read genetics book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was a total surprise. If you had told me a few weeks ago that I would be devouring a book about mitochondrial DNA and its role in tracing human evolution, I would have laughed. But this book is extremely easy to read. Sykes' narrative style, which includes a discussion of the complicated science of genetics but framed in stories of how he has used science to solve mysteries, makes it very easy to follow what he's saying and to actually learn about this exciting area of science.

I loved the research projects he discussed in the first part of the book, including testing the Romanovs and exploring the origins of native Polynesians. I agree with a friend of mine who also read this and thought that the book is actually *less* interesting when he gets into the hypothetical biographies of the Seven Daughters themselves.

But overall, I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. It even came in handy as I was at a discussion group focusing on the topic of intelligent design, and I was able to speak intelligently about what I'd learned about human evolution through Sykes and his research.

Favorite book

Favorite book of the last 5 years. She is down to earth, funny at times, so knowledgeable and able to make somewhat difficult concepts cone to light. One of my favorite concepts was to be gentle to your touch as if it was a bubble being touched with a feather as well as being less solid but spacious and not make everything such a big deal. Also most key for me was not to run from the queasy, fearful, anything unwanted, etc. that they are the lessons and the richness of life.

Rod Baxter, author of Operational Excellence Handbook, Strategy Driven for Success Handbook, Project Management for Success Handbook, Problem Solving for Success Handbook, and Workshop Facilitation for Success Handbook, is principal and cofounder of Value Generation Partners, headquartered in Naples, FL. In his thirty-year career, he has led operational excellence and continuous improvement efforts for organizations such as ACI Worldwide, Diebold, The Hoover Company, The Timken Company, GOJO Industries, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Kent State University. Not bad for the price.

The book is more a glossary than a handbook. The author's 70 topics are touched on very superficially with just enough of an introduction to make the reader want to learn more about them - by consulting other resources. Many of the topics in this book are covered more adequately in Nancy Tague's The Quality Toolbox, but the ones that Tague doesn't cover are nicely introduced here. There is definitely value in this book, but I think I would have sent it back if it had cost much more than it did. If you haven't had any other introduction to quality or business management tools, this could be a good start. Or, find a copy of the table of contents and do a google search to learn just as much, if not more. If you're a serious practitioner or student of the subject, pay the price for something meatier like Tague or Breyfogle.
