Donald Chu holds a doctorate from Stanford University, is a certified athletic trainer and member of the NATA Hall of Fame. PLYOMETRIC EXERCISES With the Medicine Ball: Optimum performance of an athlete requires two complementary abilities: skill and power. All sports share these features. This book describes exercises designed to develop power, particularly the speed component of power, in the upper extremities trunk and lower extremities. It begins with planning of a program focusing on intensity, duration and recovery. It explains the classifications of the exercises. It then moves into the actual exercises with usually five in each area of: Arm - individual, Arm - partner; Trunk - individual, Trunk - partner; Leg - individual, Leg - partner; Passing; general Upper, general Trunk, general Lower; with a whole section of exercises for the Wheelchair Athletes. As you can see, it is vary comprehensive and I find it an excellent book that I have now incorporated in to the exercise class I teach at a local fitness center.

Basic yet effective

This book reads like a blue print for medicine ball works as it pertains to developing speed and strength. The exercises presented are the foundation of such work and hence are valuable to the beginner. Those looking for more advanced exercises and techniques will probably be disappointed. Conclusion: great for the beginner.

The title of this book is extremely misleading.
It's packed full of stupid things like "medicine ball biceps curls," "triceps extensions," "good mornings," etc... These are not plyometric exercises! Basically it's an excuse to use a medicine ball for classic weight lifting moves.

Combined with this are some very basic throwing moves, of which I was hoping for more of.

The drawings are of course crude stick figures, and the directions are weak.

I'm returning this book.

A little imagination will go a longer ways than this book.

A must read

A powerful real story with spiritual twists you don't expect. It blows some of my spiritual ideas out of the water and challenged me to be patient in life. An inspiring story of every-day women going where angels fear to tread because of their love for Jesus. I highly recommend this as a must read for any who want to know God's power and love more deeply.

Don't read this book...

Don't read this book if you don't want to be convicted of God's awesome power, of the need to 'go ye into all the world', and of the relatively powerless life most American Christians lead. The testimony of Joanne Shetler was an inspiration to me. My God is much greater than I give him credit for being. I intended to merely skim this book as research for a novel I'm working on, but the story compelled me to read every word and then read it--prayerfully--again.

This book has really touched my heart and has shown me that God is so BIG and awesome!!! All the numerous ways that God used Joanne's ministry to bring the Balangaos to Him was incredible. All of the miracles mentioned in the book are amazing, and could have only happened through God.

Typically then, in Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, Gunaratana, who is the Buddhist chaplain at American University and the president of the Bhavana Society in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia, delves into the "Eightfold Path" of understanding, thinking, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration. Each chapter devoted to these efforts explains the wisdom of these skillful pursuits and then closes with a "key points" list to summarize highlights. This work is best suited to readers who are very new to Buddhism or who want a taste of the tradition served in a thoroughly American style. Gunaratana (Mindfulness in Plain English) writes in a very simple form and uses highly accessible illustrations to teach. For example, "Even though unskillful deeds may bring temporary happiness when, for example, a drug dealer is pleased with his shiny new car the Buddha pointed out that wrong actions always lead to harm." Though this book is too elemental for most devoted practitioners and does not particularly distinguish itself among the many of its ilk, it may find a useful berth where many voices and versions are generally desirable.

For those who want to learn more about the Eightfold Path in a very practical way, this book fits the bill. Bhante Gunaratana, author of Mindfulness in Plain English, offers a very down to earth approach to understanding and being able to apply the tenets of the eightfold path which is stated in the Fourth Noble Truth. I have read this book many times and use it in my classes. Highly recommended for beginners and experienced practitioners of insight meditation as well as those who just want to explore.

A Must Have...

If you are drawn to Expository preaching, then this is a book you must add to your library. It will illuminate many insights often overlooked or never thought of by its readers. Insightful yet challenging. It is not a concise literary presentation, but it is readable and viable to the preaching student who wants to evolve.

Preaching: The Art of Narrative Exposition
What I expected was to be another book teaching how to prepare a sermon was a very pleasant and different book. There are indeed some very good points about creating a sermon and the author gives many pointers along the way in the form of questions and outlines that one can use to help guide them in their sermon preparation. This book was different in that it teaches things that most preachers will probably never learn in seminary: the interaction with the congregation.
Miller calls for us to be expositors, but not dull, dreary ones. We should be expositors who can tell the story of God's glory in a manner that grips the hearts and minds of the people. Whether we add humor, drama, good illustrations, or use a narrative text, we should always seek to create something more than a three point sermon. It's not that we should have a 4-7 point sermon. It's that we should rather refuse to take the one point of a text and break it into pieces that seem unrelated. Let the sermon have one point even if our outline has seven. What? Yes. The sermon should find the big picture of the text and simply repaint the picture so as to appeal to the heart of each hearer with the message of God.
In so doing, Miller reminds us to exegete our text before we turn to the books. We should read our text and learn all that we can from it on our own before we turn to the library to see what others have to say about it. In so doing, we become part of the text, it becomes part of us, and our people recognize the fact that what we are preaching is from our hearts.
Not only should we exegete the text, but we should exegete the congregation. Most pastors know to whom they are preaching. We should see the crowd, know their needs, heartaches, and struggles. We should then take our text and see how it relates to them and how we should apply it to them.
What truly spoke to me, however, is the fact that Miller calls for the preacher to be a person in whom the fire of God burns. The church will seldom get on fire if the pulpit is not burning brightly. He calls for the pastor to be a man of character who will live what he preaches and have a good testimony before the people so that they know he is genuine. The strength of a sermon is not always found in rhetorical skill, but often in relationships. The people often listen because of what and who the pastor is instead of how he speaks.
The author also warns us about common pitfalls such as: expecting each sermon to be our best, and the next sermon to improve upon that. Often we fail. When we are committed to being faithful, and the church knows that we love Christ and them, we can relax in the performance category and get down to the work of simply getting the message across. He also speaks about dealing with disruptions, long-term pastorates, and much more.
If I were to sum it up, I would say that Miller calls the preacher to not only be a good expositor who can relate the message to the people, but to be a sermon in himself so that the people will listen to him.
