Great book refuting the "trail of blood"
By William Sandell
First, I would like to point out the goal of this book. McGoldrick is not saying that there wasn't true, baptist churches throughout history. However, as McGoldrick points out, the historical evidence seems to indicate that there weren't. He shows, through referencing primary source documents, that all the churches that many in the Landmark tradition claim as part of the "trail" are no where near being baptists. While they are independent from Rome, many of them held very similar theology to Catholicism. Many were in fact heretical (several of the medieval sects were dualists). I would love to believe that there have always been baptist churches. However, as McGoldrick proves, the historical evidence doesn't support it. On top of that, the early English Baptists of the 17th century (who we can trace our lineage back to) all claim to have broken away from either Anglican, Catholic, or congregationalists churches (all of who were infant baptizers). We need to be honest about our history and not try to rewrite it because we don't like it. Much of the history of the church is ugly, but the fact that we still have strong Christian churches today shows that God is faithful, even if there were many times when the churches were corrupt.

McGoldrick Makes Major Contribution to Baptist History!
By danolaird@email.msn.com
This is a book that needed to be written and finally, someone with the intelligence, background, scholarship, and GUTS has done it!
This amazing work is the difinitive answer to the theory of "Baptist Successionism," promoted in the early 1900's by Dr. JM Carroll.
Approximately two million copies of Carroll's booklet, "The Trail of Blood," have been printed and continue to be printed and distributed in the United States. With incisive reasoning and documented historical fact, McGoldrick provides a long-overdue response to Carroll's shoddy scholarship intellectual dishonesty.
McGoldrick's book is a must-read for anyone interested in Baptist Successionism. It is also a useful reference for those interested in the history of Christianity- particularly 19th century American "restoration" religions.

Expose of the Landmark Baptist philosophy of church history
By A Customer
The argument of the book is: "...to show that, although free church groups in ancient and modern times sometimes promoted doctrines and practices agreeable to modern Baptists, when judged by standards now acknowledged as baptistic, not one of them merits recognition as a Baptist church. Baptists arose in the seventeenth century in Holland and England. They are Protestants, heirs of the Reformers"(p. 2). He deals with Landmarkism in 146ff. He argues that Landmarkism is an American product, a radical version of ecclesiology. Landmarkism's major premise is the denial of universal church. IMO, McGoldrick's work deals a death knell to all forms of Baptist Successionsim. He is not afraid to point out the shoddy scholarship of many Baptist *historians.* Many Baptist historians are known for quoting baptist historians who are known for quoting baptist historians who are known for ... They are also known for quoting paedobaptists who support their position. However, many Baptist historians of the successionist mentality rarely quote primary source documents and when they do they are very selective. McGoldrick goes ad fontes (to the sources) and shows that all forms of successionsim are misguided.
